THE GAY FARMERS STORY

The idea for The Gay Farmer came in the beginning of 2008 after doing my first olive harvest on my mother’s small holding in Moratalla, north west Murcia in Spain. The harvest takes us around a week to ten days of hard work netting the ground around the olive tree, up the tree precariously holding on to a large branch and also up a ladder carefully getting the olives off the

branches without bruising the precious fruit. Then around 4 pm we place the crates in the back of the car and take them to the local co-op for processing into oil. I love this time of year working outside, more often than not in t-shirts enjoying the warm January Spanish sunshine collecting nature’s harvest. The oil from our harvest tasted wonderful and the idea came to import to the UK and sell to local delis, wholefood and grocery stores. The word spread amongst my friends and, being a gay man, they teased me with, “so what are you now dear, the gay farmer?” The Gay Farmer was born! After 7 harvests with the local Mill and an ever-increasing knowledge of Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil I made the decision, on my birthday, in February 2019 whilst at our farm to switch Olive Mills to one of the finest and oldest family run Organic mills in the country. After 6 generations at Cortijo El Tobazo, since 1850 no less, the family produce one of the finest Arbequina and Picual Olive Oils available. Their organic and bio diversity principles are second to none, resulting in an Olive forest, where the land is not rotavated, leaving a sea of green goodness for 197 different species of fauna and flora as nature intended. Only the necessary pruning and clearing of vegetation around the trees with as little interfering as possible. Indeed all the cuttings, leaves along with the mill waste and local organic cow dung are composted to achieve a natural organic fertiliser, which is then incorporated into the olive grove. The Olive Mill is situated at the centre of a 1500-acre estate, ensuring the olives are from tree to press in less than 3 hours to limit oxidization. This preserve maximum health benefits and flavour. So that is the story so far, all that is left to say is “Enjoy”, The Gay Farmer, Multi Award Winning Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oils at their finest and as it should be, whilst caring and respecting others and this beautiful planet we live on for generations to come…

Those little stars on our cans? We’re rather proud of them ⭐

The Gay Farmer has been recognised by the Great Taste Awards, where products are blind tasted by an independent panel of food and drink experts, with taste taking centre stage.

For us, it’s another bit of recognition for something we’ve been committed to from the beginning: producing superbly delicious Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil 🫒

You may have spotted a slightly different version of our cans 👀

At the end of 2024, we introduced our TGF x akt q***r cans, with £1 from every can sold donated to akt.

akt is the national LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity, supporting 16-25-year-olds who are facing homelessness or living in a hostile environment. Their mission is to ensure every LGBTQ+ young person has a safe place to live.

It’s a cause that means a great deal to us - and thanks to everyone who has chosen a q***r can, we’ve now raised £4,409 (and counting!).

Our TGF x akt Arbequina and Picual cans are available directly from our website and from our tasting room in Bermondsey 🫒

So, who is The Gay Farmer? 🏳️‍🌈

Well…me 👋🏼

What started back in 2008 on my mother’s small farm in Spain - and a rather brilliant nickname from some dear friends back in London - eventually became ‘The Gay Farmer’.

In 2012, I decided to take our olive oil to market, built around principles that still sit at the heart of everything we do today: organic farming, quality, provenance and a real respect for the land.

Over the years, my own obsession with olive oil has only grown. Since 2019, I’ve focused on single-variety oils, giving you the chance to experience just how different one olive can taste from another - from our punchier Picual to our more delicate Arbequina.

A lot has changed since that first harvest. But what we’re trying to do has always been quite simple: produce really bloody good Extra Virgin Olive Oil, without compromising on what matters to us.

And somehow, a joke between friends became my life’s work.

Enjoy!

Exceptional Extra Virgin Olive Oil starts long before it reaches your kitchen 🫒

It starts at the source.

From the way the land is cared for and the olives are grown, to the harvest and the mill. How it’s stored, transported and quality checked. Even the packaging matters - which is why our oil is protected in tins, away from the light that can affect its quality.

Every stage plays a part in what eventually reaches your table.

Our Early Harvest Picual and Arbequina are organic, single-estate and single-variety, allowing the distinct tasting notes of each olive variety to come through.

From olive grove to kitchen table, with care at every step. That’s our idea of farm to table 🍽️

Since our launch in Waitrose, we’ve had a few questions about the difference between our two Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oils.

🫒 Arbequina
Our gentler, more delicate oil, with very little bitterness and a peppery finish/kick. Lightly herbaceous with notes of nuts, citrus and dried herbs, it’s a brilliant all-rounder for everyday cooking and finishing.

🌿 Early Harvest Picual
Our more robust oil, with intense fruitiness, bitterness and pepper. Expect fresh, green flavours with notes of apple skin, leafy greens, citrus and tomato. Perfect for finishing pasta and soups, dipping with bread, bruschetta, salads or pairing with stronger flavours.

Both are single-estate, organic EVOOs, naturally high in polyphenols - just with two very different personalities.

Are you Team Arbequina? Team Picual? Or both? Let us know below! 👇
