A busy day mulching the kitchen garden paths with help from wwoof volunteers Rebecca, Tom and Naomi. First any self sown plants were removed and replanted to other areas, so lots of poached egg plant, ox eye daisy, mullein, dwarf comfrey, creeping thyme, feverfew, American landcress and calendula were transferred to the forest garden. Then cardboard and lots of woodchip (thanks to @blackisletreeservices). The beds are also being cleared and topped up with home grown Compost before spring planting over the next few weeks. #permaculture #regenerative #wwoof #wwoofers #wwoofuk #nodig

Yesterday we hosted our first reading group with Artist in Residence Fionn Duffy, where we explored the gardens and woodland and read related texts and poems. We also shared tea and cakes by the Yurt fireside (still a bit of a spring chill in the air!) thanks to @circus_artspace for organising and to everyone that came and participated and made it such a nice afternoon.

It's been 4 (at times long and difficult!) years in the making, but we've finally finished Coll Cabin! We started building both cabins at the end of 2018, and the smaller, Siskin, was finished just in time for the first lockdown in 2020, but we've managed to rent it for two somewhat restricted seasons. During that period we've also worked to complete the second larger cabin, and today we've reached the significant personal milestone of putting the last few bits inside! While it's difficult to be in a celebratory mood with the current troubles in the world, we'll be having a few nights 'staycation' and opening a bottle of organic Prosecco we've been saving. Next week we welcome our first Artist in Residence, @fionn000 for 3 weeks, so an exciting April ahead with both cabins being used for the first time. Coll Cabin will be available to book for holidays from mid May onwards.. Check our website or Airbnb profile to book.

We've been focused on finishing Coll Cabin in time for the #seedbed residency, but let's not forget Siskin cabin, which we opened today for our first guest of the season. It seems like deja vu to be saying 'let's hope this year turns out better and brighter for everyone', but against a backdrop of war, climate crisis, Pandemic and economic uncertainty its worth repeating. A couple of of tiny cabins in the Highlands might not make much difference to any of it but at least, little by little, it's a positive drop in the ocean.#permaculture #tinyhouse #ecofriendlytourism #responsibletourism #visitscotland #greentourismgold

In 2017 we completed the overall design for our site and have since then been working to grow and build it. 5 years on and we've made an updated design map showing how it's all developing, and it's very pleasing to see that most of the ideas are now either completed or well underway. A design will never be finished but all the structure, systems and cycles needed are in place, and the conditions for healthy growth and maturity are in there. #permaculture #forestgarden #sustainableliving #Ecological

SEED BED Residency
🌱🪴🥬
Open Call for Artists
Deadline: 7 January 2022

The Seed Bed Residency is a collaboration between Circus Artspace and Black Isle Permaculture & Arts (BIPA), supported by Creative Scotland.

We are looking for a contemporary visual artist to undertake a 3 week residency in a timber, off-grid eco cabin sited in BIPA’s organic permaculture garden and smallholding in the Scottish Highlands during April 2022.

This opportunity is open to artists, at all stages of their career, seeking to develop their practice through reflection, simple living, and new modes of research, inquiry, and production. The resident artist is also invited to engage with local artists, networks and communities.

This Seed Bed Residency opportunity is ideal for artists working in the fields of sustainable living and food production, climate crisis, and ecology, in dialogue with people, places, and ecosystems.

Artist’s Fee: £1,500

Quiz question. Does anyone know what these little brown seed like balls are? We found them indoors down the back of some furniture. They are rough textured a bit like a beech nut but very hard with a kind of resiny amberish inside. Are they some sort of insects eggs, perhaps like a gall wasp but bigger! Answers on a postcard please..

We're finally getting our cabin build back on track, with work on the kitchen and bathroom fit out (the waterless compost toilet is from @strumpetandtrollop). Coll Cabin (as it's now called, after the ogham tree alphabet for Hazel and apparently where the name Kilcoy originates) will be opening in spring 2022! #ecobuilding #offgrid #tinyhouse #greentourism

About our place

We are Clive and Julie, who co-own and run Black Isle Permaculture & Arts (BIPA), a Permaculture smallholding and business on the Black Isle, 13km north of Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland.

What is our Permaculture smallholding

In August 2015 we moved to a bungalow nestled in a 2.5 acre garden and woodland and are developing an organic Permaculture project for food, wood fuel, habitat, well-being, abundant foraging, leisure and education and livelihood.

We are a domestic micro-smallholding where we are able to live a creative, sustainable and resilient lifestyle by the Permaculture Principles of People Care, Earth Care and Fair Share: a place where people can visit, stay, learn from and be inspired by an example of an organic smallholding incorporating a home based economy and resilient business plan.
