Look what I saw this morning on the patio. I believe this is a spider wasp carrying what is probably a wolf or garden spider.

I watched it for some time as it dragged the much larger spider towards its burrow.

The spider isn’t dead but paralysed by the wasp’s sting. The tell-tale sign is that its legs are still spread out and flexible. When a spider dies, its legs usually curl up underneath its body.

The wasp will lay a single egg on the spider. When the egg hatches, the larva feeds on the still-living spider, ensuring the food remains fresh until it has finished developing.

It’s a jungle out there!

NB: Talking of jungles… we’ll be at the Worstead Festival next week! 😁
