Review: The Broken Egg, Hill Farm, Redenhall Road, Harleston, Norfolk IP20 9QN
Last summer, we visited The Broken Egg for lunch with a friend. It was our first time there, and we were eager to see what it offered. The café boasts a diverse menu, including cooked breakfasts, lunches, and light bites, as well as cakes and sweet treats available throughout the day. They emphasise they use farm-fresh produce, which adds an appealing touch to their offerings.
For those with dietary requirements, gluten-free bread is available, as a substitute for sandwiches and toast. The menu also indicates that the breakfast sausages are gluten-free, though the vegetarian sausages are not.
Atmosphere & Service
Upon arrival, the cafĂ© was noticeably quiet, lacking a vibrant atmosphere. However, we received a warm greeting from the staff, who handed us menus and let us choose our seating. The interior had a rustic barn-like charmâsimple tables and chairs, slightly chilly, but welcoming nonetheless. Since it was a lovely day, we opted to sit outside at a picnic table, where we enjoyed the sunshine and a view of the nearby chickens, adding a delightful countryside charm to our visit.
The food took longer to arrive than anticipated, especially given that only two other tables were occupied. However, the staff remained polite and attentive, checking in on us throughout our meal.
Food & Drinks
The menu offers a range of options, including gluten-free substitutions, which is commendable. However, the quality of ex*****on did not match the potential of the farmâs fresh ingredients.
BLT on gluten-free bread (ÂŁ6.50) â The sandwich arrived with a side garnish and crisps, making for an attractive presentation. However, the taste didnât quite match the visual appeal. The undercooked bacon lacked crispness, and the gluten-free bread was disappointingly dry, clinging unpleasantly to the roof of my mouth. A small amount of butter or a higher-quality gluten-free alternative could have made a noticeable difference. While the dish had potential, it ultimately fell short in ex*****on.
Bacon, brie, and cranberry baguette (ÂŁ7.50) â This dish was served with a side garnish and crisps, which added a nice touch. However, much like the previous dish, it was marred by undercooked bacon. My wife found the fatty portions too chewy and had to remove them. While the overall flavour combination was enjoyable, the ex*****on fell short, leaving much to be desired. Itâs a shame, as the dish had potential, but the undercooked bacon impacted the experience.
Crispy chicken, bacon, and garlic mayo wrap (ÂŁ8.50) â Our son enjoyed the crispy chicken wrap. It came with a side garnish and crisps, and the wrap itself was filled with crispy chicken and mixed leaves. While the chicken was well-received, the bacon was almost nonexistent, leaving the wrap feeling incomplete. The side garnish included apple, which was a nice touch, though the tangy salad dressing was a bit divisive, with mixed opinions on its flavour.
Beef burger (ÂŁ13.00, no longer available) â The most visually striking dish of all, the burger was generously topped with cheese, crispy bacon, and golden onion rings, served alongside hand-cut chips and homemade coleslaw. The burger was juicy and full of flavour, and the bacon was cooked to perfection, (not like the rest of the meals) adding a satisfying crunch.
The drinks menu is extensive, offering tea, coffee, juices, milkshakes, and alcoholic beverages, with prices ranging from ÂŁ2.50 to ÂŁ16. While this variety is appreciated, it does little to compensate for the inconsistencies in food quality.
Overall Experience
One of the highlights of our visit was the setting. The surrounding countryside, the presence of farm animals like chickens and goats, and the option to visit the cows near the car park added a charming, rural touch. Additionally, the café sells farm produce, such as eggs and rapeseed oil, which is a nice extra for visitors.
While the Broken Egg uses excellent ingredients, the cooking did not always bring out their full potential. Would we return? Perhaps to try breakfast, but it wouldnât be our first choice for lunch again. The pricing is reasonable given the quality of ingredients, but the ex*****on of cooking left something to be desired. Some small adjustments in technique could significantly enhance the overall dining experience.
