Carberrys - A Cozy Cafe in Norwich

Nestled at 18 Wensum Street in the historic Tombland area near Norwich Cathedral, Carberrys Cafe is a charming and welcoming spot for breakfast, lunch, or a relaxing cup of tea.
My wife initially discovered this cafĂ© while searching for a quiet place to work on her university assignments. The staff were incredibly accommodating, suggesting she sit upstairs, which was closed then, ensuring she wouldn’t be disturbed. Impressed by the experience, she recommended we visit for lunch—and I’m glad we did.

Atmosphere & Service

Carberrys has a warm and inviting atmosphere, featuring original architectural details and a unique shopfront. The café is dog-friendly, with its resident dog who warmly greets customers without being intrusive. While it can get busy, we had no trouble finding a table on a weekday. The upstairs seating area is typically closed but appears to open during busier times and is also used for hosting music events across various genres.

The staff were friendly, attentive, and accommodating, particularly regarding my gluten-free needs. They explained that, due to the small kitchen space, cross-contamination could be a possibility—something celiacs should be aware of—but they make every effort to minimize this risk. Their honesty and willingness to assist were greatly appreciated.

Food & Drinks

Carberrys offers a varied selection of breakfasts, lunches, and cakes. Gluten-free options are somewhat limited; however, all paninis can be made gluten-free for an additional 50p. On the day of our visit, the only gluten-free cake available was carrot cake, though the staff mentioned they usually try to offer at least two gluten-free choices.

I ordered the Bacon, Brie, and Cranberry Panini (ÂŁ9.45)
This was served with salad, homemade coleslaw, and crisps. The panini itself came in two smaller portions, which was perfectly fine. The bacon was well-cooked, though I would have preferred it a bit crispier. The brie was generous and deliciously melty, complementing the cranberry sauce well. The gluten-free panin was a pleasant surprise—not dry like some alternatives—making it easy to enjoy. The homemade coleslaw was outstanding; I could have easily eaten more of it!

My wife opted for the homemade sausage roll meal (ÂŁ8.95)
Also included salad, coleslaw, and crisps. The sausage roll was impressively large, with well-seasoned meat and flaky pastry. She thoroughly enjoyed it along with the coleslaw.

To drink, we shared a pot of breakfast tea (ÂŁ5.80).
Being quite particular about tea—we prefer strong brews like Yorkshire Tea—we were pleased with its quality and taste.

Overall Experience

Our lunch cost around £24, which, while reasonable for two people, seemed a little high when considering individual prices. The added cost for gluten-free options is always a frustration, but given the expense of gluten-free products in general, it’s understandable.
Carberrys Cafe is a wonderful, cosy place with a relaxed vibe, cheerful and helpful staff, and quality food. The dog-friendly policy is a nice bonus, and we will certainly be returning. A slightly expanded gluten-free menu would be a welcome improvement, but even as it stands, there are still options available. Vegetarians are also catered for, making it an inclusive spot for many dietary preferences.

If you’re looking for a charming cafĂ© in Norwich with great service and a homely feel, Carberrys is well worth a visit!

Review: The Broken Egg, Hill Farm, Redenhall Road, Harleston, Norfolk IP20 9QN

Last summer, we visited The Broken Egg for lunch with a friend. It was our first time there, and we were eager to see what it offered. The café boasts a diverse menu, including cooked breakfasts, lunches, and light bites, as well as cakes and sweet treats available throughout the day. They emphasise they use farm-fresh produce, which adds an appealing touch to their offerings.

For those with dietary requirements, gluten-free bread is available, as a substitute for sandwiches and toast. The menu also indicates that the breakfast sausages are gluten-free, though the vegetarian sausages are not.

Atmosphere & Service

Upon arrival, the cafĂ© was noticeably quiet, lacking a vibrant atmosphere. However, we received a warm greeting from the staff, who handed us menus and let us choose our seating. The interior had a rustic barn-like charm—simple tables and chairs, slightly chilly, but welcoming nonetheless. Since it was a lovely day, we opted to sit outside at a picnic table, where we enjoyed the sunshine and a view of the nearby chickens, adding a delightful countryside charm to our visit.

The food took longer to arrive than anticipated, especially given that only two other tables were occupied. However, the staff remained polite and attentive, checking in on us throughout our meal.

Food & Drinks

The menu offers a range of options, including gluten-free substitutions, which is commendable. However, the quality of ex*****on did not match the potential of the farm’s fresh ingredients.

BLT on gluten-free bread (£6.50) – The sandwich arrived with a side garnish and crisps, making for an attractive presentation. However, the taste didn’t quite match the visual appeal. The undercooked bacon lacked crispness, and the gluten-free bread was disappointingly dry, clinging unpleasantly to the roof of my mouth. A small amount of butter or a higher-quality gluten-free alternative could have made a noticeable difference. While the dish had potential, it ultimately fell short in ex*****on.

Bacon, brie, and cranberry baguette (£7.50) – This dish was served with a side garnish and crisps, which added a nice touch. However, much like the previous dish, it was marred by undercooked bacon. My wife found the fatty portions too chewy and had to remove them. While the overall flavour combination was enjoyable, the ex*****on fell short, leaving much to be desired. It’s a shame, as the dish had potential, but the undercooked bacon impacted the experience.

Crispy chicken, bacon, and garlic mayo wrap (£8.50) – Our son enjoyed the crispy chicken wrap. It came with a side garnish and crisps, and the wrap itself was filled with crispy chicken and mixed leaves. While the chicken was well-received, the bacon was almost nonexistent, leaving the wrap feeling incomplete. The side garnish included apple, which was a nice touch, though the tangy salad dressing was a bit divisive, with mixed opinions on its flavour.

Beef burger (£13.00, no longer available) – The most visually striking dish of all, the burger was generously topped with cheese, crispy bacon, and golden onion rings, served alongside hand-cut chips and homemade coleslaw. The burger was juicy and full of flavour, and the bacon was cooked to perfection, (not like the rest of the meals) adding a satisfying crunch.

The drinks menu is extensive, offering tea, coffee, juices, milkshakes, and alcoholic beverages, with prices ranging from ÂŁ2.50 to ÂŁ16. While this variety is appreciated, it does little to compensate for the inconsistencies in food quality.

Overall Experience
One of the highlights of our visit was the setting. The surrounding countryside, the presence of farm animals like chickens and goats, and the option to visit the cows near the car park added a charming, rural touch. Additionally, the café sells farm produce, such as eggs and rapeseed oil, which is a nice extra for visitors.
While the Broken Egg uses excellent ingredients, the cooking did not always bring out their full potential. Would we return? Perhaps to try breakfast, but it wouldn’t be our first choice for lunch again. The pricing is reasonable given the quality of ingredients, but the ex*****on of cooking left something to be desired. Some small adjustments in technique could significantly enhance the overall dining experience.
