Shipstone's Micro Brewery In 1852, James Shipstone first opened a brewery in Basford, Nottingham. No pressure then James!!! He was a man of great ideas, very adventurous.

The city already had a reputation for great b**r, its cave system had over 28 Malt Kilns, cellars in the sandstone rock were also perfect for brewing, fermenting and storage.The mineral properties of its waters had created and maintained a certain quality in brewing. Nottingham's ale was well known and word of its qualities were even written about in a famous folk song. Like many he moved quickly

on from a small brewhouse and was a pioneer in the application of science into the brewing industry. The basic principles of brewing might remain broadly constant, but there were many ways in which the craft could be improved by the applications of science and industry. The demand for Shipstone's b**rs grew, he applied his findings to produce better quality b**r and on a much larger scale. Eventually building the Star Brewery in Basford on the site where his brewed his first barrel. We have embarked on a journey to protect & preserve this Nottingham Icon, back brewing on a very small scale to ensure the very best quality, using tried and tested methods and ingredients found in the archives. The b**rs are gaining a great following and we thank everyone for your support.

Unsurprisingly, many of you spotted it straight away.

The pub was indeed our very own Johnson Arms on Abbey Street, in Lenton.

Standing proudly alongside the River Leen since the 1860s (originally as the Abbey Tavern), it was rebuilt by Frank Johnson in 1912. Shipstone’s took over in 1953, and it has been a landmark on that corner ever since.

While the surrounding area looks a little different today, the building remains a classic. It features traditional Shipstone’s etched glass windows, proudly boasts the best b**r garden in Lenton, and is still serving proper pints on tap.

Who will be dropping in for a drink here this weekend? 🍺

Another piece of Shipstone’s pub history. 🍺⭐

This photograph from the archives shows one of our classic houses as it looked decades ago, complete with the distinctive white-painted gable end and hand-lettered signage. While the surrounding road and traffic may have changed over the years, the building itself remains a proud staple of the local community and still serves a proper pint to this day.
