All ready for our first Cosy Winter Calf Chat experience of the year 🩷🩷🩷

The snow is gone and today we’ve started our winter bracken management grazing on this south-facing slope around the Achacha.

It’s a beautiful, 5 or 6 acre area of really good species-rich grazing - but the bracken is encroaching — still patchy, but spreading fast. Last winter we trialled feeding directly onto some small bracken patches in late winter and were amazed at how much impact that had, so this year we’re starting earlier, with bigger numbers and more intention🐂🐂🐂🐂🐂😀

We’ve mapped and photographed the area and are feeding 7 lively young cows and heifers on top of the bracken, with hay grazing alongside. There’a s lots of movement, trampling, and general chaos — all very helpful when you’re trying to knock bracken back without chemicals.

We’ll feed a few days on each patch and keep an eye on how it changes. It’ll be really interesting to see how it looks come spring.

What an incredibly beautiful Winter solstice afternoon we’ve had here in Argyll- (this is our amazing senior cow - 17 year old Daisy! and her very handsome son Wee Jock 🐂… soon to be ready for a posse of ladies). I had planned a Christmassy picture but this was too nice not to share 🩷.. and still comes with very warm wishes to all our visitors, and friends all over the world for a peaceful Christmas and a fabulous 2026! 🐂🎄

Evie and Gem with wee calves Legs and Lizzie very happily coming up to the milking shed tonight with Ted (our new bull) in tow …. Yes you guessed - Pure Highland will be back on the menu!! Better late than never!! It’s been a strange spring with some things very early like sunshine and orchids … and other things so late .. like grass and calves!
