Who is responsible for school food?
It is easy to think of school food as something that sits with the catering team but responsibility goes much wider than the kitchen.
Governing bodies and trustees are responsible for ensuring the School Food Standards are met and from September 2027 schools are being asked to appoint a lead governor for school food and publish their school food policy and menus online. This means schools will need clear oversight of what is being provided and how standards are being monitored.
Now is a useful time for schools and trusts to look at how catering is managed in practice. Is there clear responsibility? Is performance being reviewed? Does the food policy reflect what is actually happening across the school and are governors receiving the information they need?
ACE Advice provides independent practical support to help schools and trusts understand how their catering provision is performing and where improvements may be needed.
