The language of flowers • Autumn 26

Floriography, the assigning of meaning to different flowers, became a popular pastime among the Victorians - a violet pinned to a blouse could signal faithfulness to a lover, while a posy of pelargoniums might signify true friendship.

In a buttoned-up age, floriography allowed people to express themselves in ways they might not be able to otherwise. A carefully chosen buttonhole was often used among the q***r community to signal pride in their identities, at a time when it was not possible to live openly.

In perfumery, we use flowers for their scents, but it can be enriching to consider what meaning they bring to a fragrance. Swipe through to explore the floriographical meanings behind Autumn 26.

Edith Morris • Autumn Artefacts

Handmade in her Bristol studio, ’s hare pins are inspired by medieval pilgrim badges, small talismanic tokens sewn or pinned to the hats and cloaks of pilgrims as devotional signs. We commissioned just twenty, to celebrate the moonlit moorlands that inspired our Autumn 26 fragrance 🌙 🐇

Each brooch is cast in 925 sterling silver using traditional mould-making and lost-wax casting techniques. These and the rest of our Autumn Artefacts drop are available for ledger members to purchase on our website.

Bottle the moon • Autumn 26

The moon has no atmosphere - therefore, it has no scent. Nonetheless, if you pause to think, there is a scent to the moon… dusty, silvery, shimmery, shadowy.

It’s that scent we’ve bottled for Autumn 26, our fragrance of heather and moor, with the smudged, spacious quality of moonlight.

Lavender Maillette • Autumn 26

New to our palette this autumn are two kinds of lavender. The variety called Maillette, often known as English lavender in gardening, was specially developed in the 1950s to yield a sophisticated, intensely aromatic oil for use in fine fragrance. With its soft, honeyed florality, ours is grown by a fourth-generation farming family in Provence’s highlands.

In Autumn 26 it brings a herbal, lilac shimmer to the opening of the fragrance - intense but soft, like moonlight.

Hara’s House • Autumn 26

Each season we dream up a world we are all longing to step into. For Autumn 26 we became intrigued by what sort of house the star of our film, Hara might live in, so set ourselves the task of bringing it to life.

A place of learning and discovery, a place where the wild things grow and where a moon might just appear… 🌙🐇📚

Hara & the Hare depicts a journey across heather-drenched moorlands, following Hara as she searches far and wide, from the purple foothills to the shelves of her own library, for the answer to one question: what has become of the missing moon?

The October episode of As the Season Turns, our podcast with Lia Leendertz, is out now.

This month we’re amid grass-spiked sand dunes, where small birds scrap over autumn berries. Late bees search for nectar ahead of winter, a rare toad crouches amid the roses and sea buckthorn, and the wind whistles, carrying songs of mermaids in from the sea. In the water, flounders flip and shimmy through the shallows, while in the sky above we see the trail of a great comet ☄️

Bowerman and the Hare • George Bronwin

Handmade and wheel-thrown, this one-of-a-kind vase was designed and made for us by potter George Bronwin in Somerset.

Composed of speckled stoneware and porcelain slip, hand-painted oxides, underglazes and 24-carat gold lustre details, Bowerman and the Hare illustrates the 11th-century legend of hunters, witches and a hare, that goes by the same name.

A Leap Through the Briar • Liv & Dom

Handmade in earthenware terracotta clay with cream slip and sgraffito detailing, this ceramic platter was made by sisters Liv and Dom Cave-Sutherland in East Sussex.

Inspired by the enamel artwork Liv & Dom created for the Autumn 26 Perfumer’s Candle, ‘A Leap Through the Briar’, depicts a leaping hare amid autumn’s abundant foliage.

Made exclusively for Ffern, in a limited run of four.

Milking Stools • Alex Walshaw

Handmade with a mix of fresh green wood and aged relic oak sourced from local woodlands, this collection of three one-of-a-kind milking stools were carved by woodwork artist in his year-round outdoor workspace.

There are three stools available, named for this season’s full moons: Harvest Moon, Hunter’s Moon and Darkest Depths Moon 🌕

Stillness in the Chase • Cece Jewellery

Forged by hand in recycled 18ct yellow gold, this one-of-a-kind enamel ring was made for us by Cece Jewellery at her workshop in London.

Hand-engraved and meticulously painted with fire and crushed glass - an age-old technique known as champlevé - it is embellished with star-set diamonds.
