I’ve written this so many times over, but it’s time to share that Berries will be closing this Sunday. Despite the big plans I once had for this place, our lease includes a break clause and along with a mix of other reasons I’ve made the difficult decision to close.
I’m so proud of everything Berries has become over the last 18 months and the community we’ve created in this tiny space. From the very first day it’s been filled with laughter in the cosy corner, stories shared across tables, familiar faces becoming friends and plenty of waggy tails bringing their owners for a coffee on their walks. I’m so grateful to everyone who walked through the door whether it was every so often or every day.
We tried to push the boundaries of what might be expected from a “sarnie shop" and the support and positive feedback was amazing. Berries itself has a long history, dating back almost 100 years, and has been part of Pontefract’s café scene for generations. We loved hearing customers share memories of coming to Berries Butties for a breakfast sarnie, with queues out the door and we hope that in years to come people will tell stories about our food, our coffee and the warm, friendly atmosphere at the heart of this place.
Although this has been the hardest 18 months of my working life and I’ve worked more hours than I ever thought possible trying to make it everything it could be, I will always be grateful for this adventure. A huge thank you to my friends and family who supported me in so many ways, and a special mention to the two amazing girls who have been my rocks at the weekends, Julie and Mai. They jump into every role without hesitation, from serving our wonderful customers and making great coffee to cooking up a storm in the kitchen. They’ve been such an important part of Berries and the atmosphere here, and I honestly couldn’t have done it without them. As we close, they’ll both be looking for new opportunities and I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for hardworking, reliable and genuinely lovely people to join their team.
We’d love to see you one last time before we close, to share a coffee and a few more memories.
