🐑⚖️ Ever Wonder How We Know Our Lambs Are Growing Well? 🚜🌿

Regular weighing is one of the most important jobs on the farm. It helps us monitor how our lambs are performing, identify any that may need a little extra attention, and make sure the whole group is thriving 💪🐑.

In this reel, you’ll see the full process from start to finish 🎥🐕. First, the dogs help gather the lambs in from the field, then each lamb is carefully guided through the handling system and into the weigh crate ⚖️. We record their weight alongside their individual ID tag number 📲 before sending them straight back out to enjoy the grass 🌱☀️.

It’s a simple process, but it gives us a huge amount of information and helps us make the best decisions for the flock throughout the season 🐑❤️

🐑⚠️ Why do lambs get stuck in fences? 🌿

Sheep are experts at convincing themselves that the grass, hedge or leaves on the other side of the fence must be better than what’s in their own field 😂🌿🐑. Unfortunately, when they push their heads through wire fencing to investigate, they can sometimes get stuck trying to get back out 😬⚠️

If you come across a trapped sheep or lamb while out walking, try to contact the farmer, or if it’s safe and you’re confident to do so, gently help free them ❤️🐑. A sheep left stuck for too long can become stressed, exhausted or injured.

The funny thing is, once they’re free, they usually go straight back to investigating the very same hedge! 🤦‍♂️😂🐑

🐑💡 DID YOU KNOW? Shearing can change how sheep recognise each other ✂️🐏

Once our tups have been shorn ✂️🐑, they don’t go straight back out into the field 🌿☀️. Sheep rely heavily on scent to recognise one another 👃🐏 and removing a year’s worth of fleece can significantly change how they smell to the rest of the group.

That’s why we keep them together in a smaller pen 🚜🐑 allowing their scents to mix and the group to settle 🤝❤️. If they were released immediately, they could see each other as unfamiliar sheep and start challenging one another 🫯

For tups, this can mean running at speed 💨🐏 and head-butting 💥🐏 which can lead to serious injuries 🚑⚠️. With around £5,500 worth of breeding tups 💷🐑 in this pen, it’s important we do everything we can to keep them safe, healthy and ready for the future 🌟❤️

Sometimes good sheep farming isn’t just about feeding and looking after stock 🌱🚜, it’s about understanding sheep behaviour 🧠🐑 and taking simple steps to prevent problems before they happen 👍🐏.

🐑✨ From Fluffy Lamb to Smartly Shorn Sheep! ✨✂️🐑

Can you believe this is the same sheep? 🤯❤️ Meet Malteser, one of our Meg lambs from the 2025 launch Bottle Feeding Sessions 🍼🐑✨

It’s amazing how different a lamb can look between being a tiny newborn fluffball 🥹💕 and having their first shearing ✂️🌱. All that wool really does hide just how much they’ve grown! 📏🐑☀️

While Malteser might be a lot bigger these days 💪🐑, one thing certainly hasn’t changed… he’s still got the same cheeky, playful personality 😆 that visitors fell in love with when he was a lamb 🥰🐑. Some sheep grow out of being mischievous 🤭, but Malteser clearly didn’t get that memo! 😂🐑

Who remembers meeting Malteser when he was just a little fluffball? 👇❤️🐑

🚜🐑 Ballakeenan Farm Is Hitting The Road! 🐑🚜

We’ve done the Manx Festival and now for the first time, we’re taking a Ballakeenan Farm experience beyond the farm gates and into communities around the Island 🌟❤️

Our first stop? Peel! 🌊

We’ve teamed up with Milestones Community Hub to launch Build-A-Pal, an experience designed to bring farming, animals and hands-on fun to even more families. As many of you know, we’re passionate about helping people connect with farming and understand where their food, wool and livestock come from 🐑🌱🚜

This is just the first of several exciting collaboration projects we’ve got planned, and we can’t wait to share them with you 🤝✨

If you’ve got a young animal lover, future farmer, someone who loves getting creative or just want a day out in Peel, take a look at the event and see what it’s all about 👇🐑🧸

🐑✨ Our Best Lambs Yet? ✨🐑

We’re now in full swing of selling this year’s lambs 🚜🌱 and it’s hard not to feel incredibly proud of what we’ve produced. Looking across the pens, these lambs have grown on brilliantly, with plenty of strength, quality and character 💪🐑❤️

In fact, after all our years of sheep farming, we’d go as far as saying these are the best lambs we’ve ever bred 🎉🌟. That’s a big statement, but seeing them thrive from tiny newborns to strong, well-grown lambs makes all the hard work worthwhile 🙌☀️🌿

Now the question is… can next year’s lambs beat them? 🤔🐑😂

🐑🥇Could You Take One of Our Lambs Into the Royal Manx Show Ring? 🥇🐑

We’re considering entering the Meg Lamb Class at this year’s Royal Manx Agricultural Show and wanted to gauge whether there might be any interest from young sheep enthusiasts! 🐑❤️

Our lambs have been missing the spotlight since Shepherd Bottle Sessions ended so we’re hoping to take them to the next big spotlight Royal Manx Agricultural Show. Dotty and Reina our Dutch Spotted girls bring plenty of sass and personality, while Minnie and Sugar, our Pedigree Poll Dorset lambs, are as friendly as they come 💚

The class is open to children under 12 years old on the day of the show, which unfortunately rules out Farmer Tom… (by just a couple of years or so!) 😂 If we decide to go ahead, all you’d need to do is,

✨ Come to Ballakeenan Farm to meet the lambs and get some practice in.
✨ Then turn up on the day and walk one of our friendly lambs around the ring on their halter.
🙌 No experience needed, just enthusiasm and a love of sheep!

Showing sheep is a brilliant way to build confidence, learn a little more about farming and, let’s be honest, spend time with some pretty adorable lambs 🥹💚 We love seeing young people getting involved in agriculture and this could be the perfect chance to give it a go 🤩

If you know a young person who would be interested, let us know in the comments and tag anyone who you think might be interested below 👇 We would love to hear from you! 🥳

🐑🧶 Over 450kg of wool sitting in these bags… and we can’t wait to show you what’s coming 👀

From teddy stuffing to new GreenFleece products, there’s a lot more potential in this wool than people might think 💚 and we plan to unlock every bit of potential! 🙌

The farm is still flat out with silage coming up and MORE sheep jobs 🚜😅 but we’re working away behind the scenes to plan and prep.

Watch this space… we’ve got plans for this lot 🐑✨

🐏😂 It’s always funny seeing the tups after shearing.

One minute they’re built like woolly bison… 10 minutes later they’re standing there wondering where half their body weight went ✂️😅

The amount of wool that comes off them never stops amazing

🐑🦷 Sheep fact of the day! 🐑🦷

Today Hercules is helping us demonstrate one of the ways farmers tell how old a sheep is 👀

Believe it or not, sheep only have a full set of teeth on their bottom jaw. On the top they’ve got what’s called a dental pad, which works surprisingly well for ripping grass off the ground 🌱😅

Even more interesting, sheep gain 2 adult incisors every year. Hercules has just got his first pair of adult teeth coming through, which tells us he’s now around 1 year old 🦷✨

Next year he’ll have 4 adult teeth, then 6, and eventually he’ll become what’s known as a “full mouth” sheep with all 8 adult incisors.

So yes, while most people check birthdays… farmers spend their time looking in sheep’s mouths 😂🐑
