πŸšœπŸ‘ OPEN FARM SUNDAY 2026 – THANK YOU! πŸ‘πŸšœ

What a fantastic day we had at Hazel Brow Farm for Open Farm Sunday!

We can’t thank everyone who came along enough. With our biggest turnout yet, it was wonderful to see so many people interested in learning more about farming, food production and life in the Yorkshire Dales. We thoroughly enjoyed welcoming visitors to the farm and celebrating British farming together.

Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed a farm animal tour, meeting many of the animals that call Hazel Brow Farm home. Farmer Martin Calvert also led farm tours, explaining how cattle are reared on an upland farm and the important role farming plays in caring for our landscape.

Neighbouring farmer Sam gave sheep shearing demonstrations, explaining why shearing is essential for sheep welfare and highlighting the value of wool as a natural and sustainable product. The demonstrations attracted lots of interest, with visitors asking plenty of questions and enjoying the opportunity to learn more about sheep farming and the importance of shearing.

We were also delighted to welcome Paige and her partner John from Midnight Sheepdogs, who put on a brilliant sheepdog demonstration. Visitors were able to watch dogs at different stages of their working careers and learn more about the skill, patience and dedication involved in training a working sheepdog. Paige also did a popular Meet the Dogs session, giving visitors the chance to get up close to her working dogs and even meet puppy Blue, the next generation of sheepdogs, who certainly stole a few hearts throughout the day!

A huge thank you goes to Martin, Sam, Paige and John for giving up their time to share their passion and knowledge with the public.

Alongside the demonstrations, visitors enjoyed our colouring competition, farm-themed crafts and plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn more about farming.

Thank you once again to everyone who attended and helped make the day such a success. We hope you left with a greater understanding of British farming and the people who work hard to produce food while caring for the countryside.

βœ‚οΈπŸ‘ SHEEP SHEARING DEMONSTRATION AT OPEN FARM SUNDAY πŸ‘βœ‚οΈ
(Please note Open Farm Sunday is now fully booked)

Shearing is one of the most important jobs in the sheep farming calendar. Removing a sheep’s fleece helps keep them comfortable during the warmer months and is essential for their health and welfare.

We’re delighted that neighbouring farmer Sam will be demonstrating sheep shearing throughout the day and explaining why this traditional farming skill remains so important today.

Unlike many farmers, Sam didn’t grow up on a farm. Through determination, hard work, he learnt his shepherding skills by working for other farmers and gaining hands-on experience. Today, he runs his own farm in Swaledale and understands first-hand the dedication required to care for livestock and the landscape.

Shearing is physically demanding work, requiring skill, strength and patience. Shepherds like Sam thrive on hard work and are passionate about sharing what modern farming is really like.

Come along to see a live shearing demonstration, learn more about sheep farming, and ask any questions you may have about life as a livestock farmer πŸ§‘β€πŸŒΎπŸ

πŸ„ MEET THE CATTLE AT OPEN FARM SUNDAY πŸ„
(Please note Open Farm Sunday is now fully booked)

Hazel Brow Farm was once a traditional dairy farm, but today Martin Calvert and his family rear cattle in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

We’re delighted that Martin will be sharing his knowledge and introducing visitors to the cattle that play such an important role in upland farming. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about how cattle are cared for throughout the year, the role they play in producing high-quality British beef, and how grazing livestock help maintain the stunning landscapes and species-rich meadows that make Swaledale so special.

Like many upland farmers, Martin’s work doesn’t stop with livestock. Alongside farming, he is also a drystone waller, helping to preserve one of the most iconic features of the Yorkshire Dales. Martin also runs drystone walling courses and experience days, as well as popular Lambing Day Experiences, giving visitors the chance to enjoy a genuine hands-on day alongside a working farmer.

For more information on Martin’s experience days and courses, visit our website. πŸšœπŸ„πŸŒΌ

πŸ‘πŸ• SHEEPDOG DEMONSTRATIONS AT OPEN FARM SUNDAY πŸ•πŸ‘
(Please note Open Farm Sunday is now fully booked)

At Hazel Brow Farm, we’re passionate about helping people understand what goes on behind the scenes on a working farm. Sheepdogs play a vital role in upland farming, helping farmers gather, move and manage livestock safely and efficiently across some of the most challenging landscapes in the country.

As part of our Open Farm Sunday event, we’re delighted to welcome Paige Misselbrook of Midnight Sheepdogs to demonstrate the incredible skill, patience and teamwork involved in training and working sheepdogs.

Paige will be running two demonstrations throughout the day, with a session in both the morning and afternoon, giving visitors plenty of opportunity to learn more about these remarkable dogs and see them in action.

πŸ• Sheepdog Training at Midnight Sheepdogs

At Midnight Sheepdogs, we believe every great sheepdog starts with trust, patience, and a willingness to learn. Sheepdog training is about far more than teaching commands, it’s about building a partnership between dog and handler that can confidently and calmly work livestock together.

Every dog is different. Some are naturally bold and eager, while others need time to build confidence and develop their instincts. Our approach focuses on bringing out the best in each dog, allowing them to progress at their own pace while learning the skills needed to become reliable working partners.

Training begins with encouraging natural herding instincts and developing control around livestock. As dogs progress, they learn how to gather, drive, pen, and manage stock efficiently while maintaining calm, respectful handling. Throughout the process, we place a strong emphasis on stock welfare, ensuring that both dogs and livestock have positive training experiences.

There’s nothing quite like watching a young dog begin to understand its job and grow into a capable sheepdog. The journey requires dedication, consistency, and plenty of patience, but the reward is a partnership built on trust and mutual understanding.

Whether you’re looking to start a young dog, improve an existing dog’s skills, or simply learn more about working sheepdogs, Midnight Sheepdogs is here to help. We are passionate about preserving the traditional skills of sheepdog handling while helping dogs and handlers reach their full potential.

There’s always plenty of excitement when it’s feeding time for our chickens! As you can see, they don’t hang about when the food arrives!

At Hazel Brow Farm we keep several different breeds, including our friendly Brown Hybrid hens, fluffy Silkies, and beautiful Salmon Faverolles.

πŸ₯š Brown Hybrids are fantastic egg layers and are known for their friendly, curious nature.

πŸͺΆ Silkies are one of the most unusual chicken breeds, famous for their incredibly soft, fluffy feathers that feel more like fur than feathers. They are gentle, calm birds and always a favourite with visitors.

🧑 Salmon Faverolles are easily recognised by their fluffy beards, feathered legs and extra fifth toe! They are known for being friendly, inquisitive birds and make wonderful additions to the flock.

Visitors to Hazel Brow Farm love meeting our chickens, learning about how they are cared for, collecting eggs and discovering the different breeds we keep. They are always a popular stop during our farm experiences and educational visits.

🏫 Our chickens also enjoy heading out on the road with us for outreach visits to schools, community groups and organisations, helping people learn about farming, animal care and where food comes from. Thanks to our Care Farming project, some visits may be fully funded.
