Introducing….Will Quack Quack & friends.

80’s kids will get it!

Will Quack Quack hatched just over a week ago but he was the only 1 out of 8 to hatch so we found someone local who had some day old ducklings so he could have some company.

As luck would have it, she also has Silver Appleyard ducks, which is the breed I’ve wanted for a few years, naturally, I bought some hatching eggs off her. Hopefully, we have a better success rate this time and in about 27 days, we’ll have some more very cute little ducklings.

Busy day today. As well as all the usual things like feeding and watering all the animals and moving the remaining meat birds, we finished the roof for our new pig shelter (the girls approve). We also knocked a post in to tighten up our electric fence separating the pigs and sheep, and we increased the height of the electric fence so the pigs shouldn’t have any more visitors.

I also paid a quick visit to our bees. We do our hive inspections on a Saturday. We’re just starting to come out of the June gap, which means there’s been very little to forage on so they’ve been using up their stores.
Poppy made some 1:1 sugar syrup for me while we were working on the pig shelter, so I was able to pop down to the orchard to feed them. The last thing we want is for them to starve.

When are the quads due Fred?

You would think he’s been on really lush grass but he’s been on really poor pasture since last year with no hard feed but he’s huge!

I do wonder if he might have some sort of metabolic issue or he’s just very lazy!

I suppose he only has to work once per year, the rest of the time he can just eat and be merry.

Apparently we acquired some new pigs, disguised as sheep last night!

This weekend’s job is to increase the height of the fence around the pigs as we ran out of time last weekend.

It was very much a ‘carry on farming’ night as the pigs also escaped! 🤦‍♀️

Evening checks on our animals in the beautiful evening sunlight and making final preparations ready to put our meat birds in the freezer tomorrow.

It’s fair to say, these chickens have lived a good life, living out on grass, being able to live as natural life as possible.

I look forward to having more space in the future so our meat birds can have a larger dedicated outdoor space but for now, this is a happy compromise and considerably better than spending their whole lives in a barn, never seeing daylight.

2nd hive inspection completed today…….

Both queens found ✅
Eggs present ✅ (needed my reading glasses to see them! 😬)
Larvae present ✅
Capped brood ✅
Loads of Nectar ✅
Pollen ✅
Capped honey 🍯 ✅
Play cups ✅
No swarm cells! ✅

One colony is huge, so I opted to add a super under the queen excluder to increase the brood area to brood and a half, fingers crossed they won’t swarm! 🤞

I’ve learned so much from the 14 Day Beekeeper course from Black Mountain Honey. I feel confident working the hives but I know I still have a huge amount to learn!

I’m sure I’m fumbling and making mistakes but that’s the best way to learn.

Shearing time for our little flock. They look so much better without their thick woolly coats on and I’m sure they’re feeling better in this heat.

This year, the farmers who rent the rest of the land where we live are keeping their sheep here instead of bringing cattle so we were able to have ours sheared at the same time.

Sometimes it can be hard getting a shearer for a small flock so it worked out well.

Elliot thoroughly enjoyed helping and was even paid £10 by the other farmers for helping. It’s fair to say he’s a very happy, albeit tired boy tonight! Proud parents!
