Gilchesters Organics is a family run business. On their organic farm just a few miles of Hadrian's Wall they grow heritage grains and offer a great range of stone-ground flours for bread making. A range of award-winning savoury Spelt biscuits to compliment cheese, pates and smoked fish are also available.

A couple of weeks ago I popped into .bakery_ for a catch up with Harry who I first met with Florrie a few years ago at a supper club by Tim Spedding (back when I was a shepherd of my Herdwick) along with discussing regen farming and grains.

Seeing their bakery buzzing with customers and bakers busy was such a joy - shelves full of incredible breads and pastries with more making their way to the front whilst I was there. It never ceases to amaze me how much production can happen in such tight kitchens!

Groundswell 2025 🌾 reflecting on what was and always is an inspiring event in the calendar. From attending the first ever Groundswell to this year’s event with over 10,000 people it feels like the focus on farming has come on leaps and bounds! The wider public acknowledgement for the need for a better food system is reenergising and seeing so many other farmers steadfast in their convictions in what better farming looks like makes us feel emboldened that the right way is very rarely the easy way.

For us, that means organic. Organic not only protects the planet but the human beings on it. Organic is inherently regenerative, and that’s a word we don’t take lightly. The term appears to take on different meanings depending on who’s talking, now it’s found its way as a marketing tool in the corporate space. But we stand by clarity and transparency. And we were delighted to meet and chat with so many others with the same mentality.

We were also glad to see the floor open up to some challenging conversations around glyphosate in the regen space. Hopefully these discussions are a driving force for more innovation and less chemicals in our food system.

Farmers don’t think in 1-5 year profit goals, we believe in 20, 30, 50 years of stewardship, ensuring we have a fertile land to pass on to generations yet to come. We’re excited to see what trials and tribulations another harvest brings, it’s all part of the fun. And for now, we’ll continue to grow slow. 💛🌱

What a day for it! Andy and headed to Duchess Farms on Monday with a team of enthusiasts to sow spring heritage trial plots, while the Gilchesters team hung up their overalls for some gardening.🪴 Millers, farmers, bakers, pasta makers, chefs all around the table. And the sun came out. 🤩💛🌾🍝
