Well, I’ve just seen this while scrolling and apparently our eggs are a bit of a bargain! 🥚😂

And ours haven’t travelled halfway across the country — never mind from overseas. They’re laid right here in South Somerset, by our own small flocks of free-ranging hens.

🥚 £2 for half a dozen

Our hens have a darn good life — and, if we’ve got time when you come to collect, you might even get the chance to meet the girls responsible for your breakfast!

It does make you wonder why we need imported eggs at all. There are small farms, smallholders and independent egg producers dotted all over the country, and there’s a pretty good chance there’s one not far from you.

Buying local doesn’t just mean knowing your food is British. It means knowing where it actually came from, supporting the people producing food in your own community, keeping more of that money in the local economy — and sometimes actually paying less for it.

So before automatically picking up a box at the supermarket, have a quick look around locally.

🥚 Something new for our regular egg customers! 🥚

Those of you who've been buying eggs from us for a while will know that we have a little band of lovely regulars who pre-pay for their eggs and then collect them as and when they need them.

It's a system that works really well... except behind the scenes it has involved an increasingly chaotic mixture of spreadsheets, messages from various places and me trying to remember who has collected what! 😂

So, over the last six months or so, I've been working on a solution.

Meet YOLK. 🥚

It's our new little app for Western Farm egg customers. If you're on YOLK, you can:

🥚 See exactly how many eggs you have left in credit
🥚 Top up your egg balance online
🥚 Request a collection for a day and time that suits you
🥚 See your previous top-ups and collections
🥚 Keep track of everything without having to message me and wait for me to find the right spreadsheet!

And, importantly, it means I can keep track of everything in one place too — which should make life considerably easier at this end.

It went live today! 🎉

A couple of our existing YOLKers are already helping me put it through its paces, and I'll be encouraging the rest of our regulars to start using it too.

But YOLK isn't only for our existing customers. If you're local to Kingsdon and would like a regular supply of our soya-free, free-range eggs, you can join too. You simply buy eggs in advance and then collect them from the farm as you need them — without having to place and pay for a new order every time.

I'm rather pleased with this one. What started as "there must be a better way of keeping track of all these eggs" somehow turned into me building the whole system from scratch.

Hopefully it'll mean less time wrestling with spreadsheets and more time looking after the creatures that actually produce the eggs! 🐔🥚

The last week we've been caring for a lamb we brought home from the field as he was very wobbly and thin, while we haven't had him tested (already got one test being done on a ewe who is now looking right as rain) for Bluetongue we're 99% certain that is what the problem was (and yes we spoke to APHA about him a few days ago).
Devastated to find him passed away in the stable this morning 😭😭, he was a fighter, he so wanted to live and we tried giving him every chance possible, resorting to nutrient drenching when he wasn't keen on eating, among other things.
Not a happy start to Saturday😭💔.
Hoping we won't lose any more 🙏🙏🙏

Introducing Fluffy — adored by everyone, and hopelessly in love with brambles.

His magnificent long locks seem to whisper “come hither” to every thorn in Somerset, and each day he ends up romantically entangled in a fresh hedgerow.
We then peel him out like a badly wrapped parcel, while he beams as if this is all part of his daily enrichment.

Fluffy thinks this is perfectly normal.
We think he’s in a committed relationship with the bramble patch.
