FizzyFavouriteFridays - been a while since I've found a new fizzy fancy mainly because all the alternative flavours tend to be geared towards the sugar free zero crowd of which I am not, however team red has done me happy with this one...

Somewhere between a cream soda or doctor pepper vibe this one just absolutely slaps on taste, creamy and quite sweet but without the sugary furry teeth sensation.

I'm still Coke over Pepsi and this just solidifies my stance.

So after some horrendous working weather I really had an urge for a chippy tea but didn't fancy a long distance adventure in evening traffic to scratch that itch, I'd noticed that a relatively local one had reopened under new ownership not long ago and thought it was a good time given them the revisit.

The Shop : as before it's nestled away to a degree you wouldn't find it unless you knew it was there or like me scour Google maps for locations, the new owners are a bit more social media active so they are pushing their shop a little bit and it's great to see them using modern tech to draw folks in.
Not much has changed aesthetically since before but it definitely feels clean and well maintained all the same inside with the two lovely girls serving getting my order together freshly and offering potted or poured on my sauce.

The Meal : a freshly cooked fish is always welcome and this one was a lovely size for a meal offer, a flatter cut with a light batter, I'd have like some more aeration to give some crispy bubble trouble but it still had a light flaky crisp to it, succulent medallions of white gold inside were a delight.
Chips were mainly irregular cuts with scraps n bits joining along, enticingly picky chips with a nice jacket and no clumpage.
Curry was smooth with a very subtle smoke and great gloopology for dippage.

The Price : £7.50 sits it fair and reasonable for me.

Overall impressions : so whilst it's not reinventing the wheel or changing the face of chippies it did do exactly what I needed, a great tasting little feed full of flavour and quality, and whilst an 8 from 5 years ago might not stand up the same with all I've experienced I'm happy to say in their case it's still a good solid 8 and deservedly so.

The Good Catch

So after a bit of a mad rush at work I've not had my fix in a few weeks and took a punt on a Google scan that was under an hour away, this one spoke out most so took a run up the M6...

The Shop : sat on the doorstep of Altrincham AFC gives this one a strong chance of good footfall on match days if nothing else.
A smartly design new school shop tiled and stainless with nice branding throughout including their packaging.
Multiple servers working to put my order together is nice to see with each carrying out their roles politely and welcomingly.
A hand written but very neatly done chalkboard pen menu gives that classic feel even with the modern twist.

The Meal : no special to order directly so build-a-bear mode engaged and with a mild and madras spice curry on offer I opted for both coming all this way.
Fish came as one sizing and cooked to order, a beautifully buttery caramelised batter with bubbles and crunch throughout and not a sign of wet squidgy, soft and chunky cod flaking away delightfully.
Chips had a nice colour and asmr'ingly scrapey jacket to the fry, holding seasoning like a champ.
The mild curry was fairly standard lumpy bumpy and to purists may appeal more, I however preferred the spicy with it's smokey garam masala tone and spot on for gloopology, a perfect dipper.
All packed and branded very smartly and professionally.

The Price : arguably up there at £10.70 for F&C with saucey supplements at £1.70 a pop but I've paid as much and more at the big fast food chains for far less savoury satisfaction.

Overall impressions : an excellent quality shop that's definitely going in my mental highlight reel top 20, a few finishing touches like lemon wedges and tartar could have elevated it towards top 10/5 easily.

With work written off for the day and not fancying a 3 hour round trip today as luck would have it a long established shop locally has recently changed hands and reopened this past week so I figured it was as good a week as any to give it a try.

The Shop : same layout and general feels inside this little terrace cut out shop with room for half a dozen inside shoulder to shoulder, a basic array of staples which for a small shop is the wise move, no specials to speak of but first week in I'm sure they'll put something on as they find their ground.
Lovely welcoming ladies all working together on orders and fresh cooking up batches of chips.
After some toing and froing on how to serve my order it all came together in a decent time even with it all being freshly fried.
Parking is tight residential but enough streets about that a short walk won't hurt.
Currently cash only but again that may be subject to change and improvement.

The Meal : as mentioned no special board(as yet) so off the menu just requesting a small cod n chips with a small curry.
The fish was cooked to order although for me it was teetering on undercooked, it just about was done enough not to be slippery, unfortunately that tight line did mean that the batter and rollover test was more flop n crumble, very light but at a cost to itself.
The chips again just a little under where I'd preferred them to be but decent enough and no clumpage.
The curry was a grand portion and the standard lumpy bumpy classic, not my favourite but passable.

The Price : £7.60 altogether but glancing at the menu I got some sort of deal I assume as I couldn't correlate menu prices to price paid, I'll take it either way as a small win.

Overall impressions : they've got some work to do to get it up there as it stands, I'll cut some slack as it's first week in a new shop, an improvement on before but with generosity provided they keep improving as they go...

After my first target turned out to be closed I went with this back up rural hidey peek of a shop tucked away as essentially the sole chippy for miles.

The Shop : currently penned in by roadworks so the usual outside parking out of action there is thankfully plenty of side streets and spots close by only meaning an additional minute or two walk round.
Caught in the lunch rush snaking queue in a pokey little shop shows that whilst it might be the only option around it still holds local favourite and staple trade.
Whiteboard handscribed menus and a few dotted laminated posters for specials keeps that rustic vibe.
Friendly and welcoming staff that got my order cooked and prepared in next to no time working their way through that late rush.

The Meal : for a mere 30p extra I opted for the large fish special with my fish cooked to order.
A beautifully crisp golden buttery batter with a satisfyingly rich crunch almost like fish crackling, soft and meaty haddock inside rounding off a lovely cut and cook.
Nice sized chips with a decent firmness and holding the seasoning well, no clumpage and a few scrappies sneaking their way in for an additional crunchy treat.
All finished off with a smokey smooth curry that coated well with the right amount of gloopology.

The Price : £8.25 for a portion this size and quality sits fine with me.

Overall impressions : I feel their own packaging isn't doing their product justice as with a better box and potted versus poured it'd be up there as an absolute treat, that said it was still absolutely delicious and certainly justified the queues out the door.

So on my last disaster trip out this way this shop was the one that rung in the most recommended for where I should have tried, with such a glorious day I decided take a ride out for a chippy tea and see if it was all well grounded.

The Shop : sat next to a local big Tesco it's very easy find parking and whilst only open for evening service they still have enough hours to serve to decent convenience.
Now I usually don't get swayed by a chatty owner but the guy came out whilst I was eating and asking about what I thought and had, I hadn't mentioned I'm a "chipfluencer" but he even threw a couple deep-fried babybells and a Cadbury crème egg my way, I want to say it won't juice the score but honestly when I've said before sometimes it's not just the shop it's the people, on this occasion they were playing on both angles and I can't not take his genuine love and passion for his shop and customers into account.

The Meal : cod special with curry and the option to have half n half battered/orange chips was a welcome addition.
The fish was beautifully soft and fleshy with flakes of white gold like an Olympic medal, great crispy batter that maybe borderline on workman's thickness but definitely no stodge.

The Price : £10.90 is a little up there but portion size and quality more than backs this up and still cheaper than going the big fast food giants so I'll take it.

Overall impressions : I wish I had double the character limit to big this one up and really dive into it but even that said absolutely worth the ride, justified the recommends and I can see a return trip just for the pleasure of it down the line, well played sir, well played.

So Google scouting the area left me quite torn as most shops were all getting up into those high 4s with this choice being one of the highest.

The Shop : sat on the corner of an intersection along a main high street road it's easy enough to spot and turn off with some rear parking available.
Almost a chippy of two halves inside it has a modern style for the most part whilst also kinda looking dated at the same time, a backlit strip board menu with a sizeable array of main staples with plenty of laminated specials dotted about the shop.
As picked up in the reviews of the search engine, the lady inside had a lovely inquisitive personality, welcoming and genuinely friendly without it feeling forced, backed up by a few regulars being recognised and attended to.

The Meal : small fish and chips special off the main menu and my fish was cooked to order.
I'm almost certain it was not a cod and more likely a basa type generic white fish which unfortunately came through in the flavour of the flesh or lack thereof, the batter was thin and pale and again pretty bland on flavour.
The beigeness continued into the moderately clumpy somewhat anaemic chips, again not overly inviting.
The curry was smooth and warm but unfortunately wasted on this pairing.
Not effecting the score but bonus "sinbin" samosa I was talked into, filling inside had a beautiful spice and smooth textures but that outer casing was as dry as a Tottenham win streak.
An unfortunate additional side note was the food handling procedures noticed, whilst waiting on my own I saw raw burgers handled and hands not washed, merely rubbed together before handling utensils and carrying on etc.
Majority DNF

The Price : £6 for the special although also got done by a £3 samosa stinger, if it were quality I'd have no complaints.

Overall impressions : everyone has their off moments and bad days but a bit too much that I can't forgive on this one, the lady serving is an all day 8+ on personality however the food wasn't.

I actually just squeeked this one is as Google had done them dirty on the opening times billing them as an all dayer so I just made it a few minutes before close, not an ideal time for reviewing normally but I'll give them their dues they didn't grumble about my order 5 minutes before lunch shut time.

The Shop : almost sat on an industrial site location in a sense with the rough road parking but a big prominent easy to access spot with plentiful spaces evens that out fine.
As mentioned very understanding staff with my late walk-in and actually quite genuinely friendly and chatty which is a welcome boost for a weary traveller(I mean it was 50 miles away).
A concise clear menu hangs above the serving station with specials just dotted off to the side wall.
Seating for a few inside again adds to the convenience of the shop.

The Meal : whilst large was available I opted for the medium cod meal and even that was more than plentiful for my belly on this hot day.
Fish cooked to order and a lovely cut with slablike medallions of white gold in a crisp, crunchy batter holding it's weight well on the rollover.
Coming in at the time I did I wouldn't expect a fresh chip batch dropping but even this end of service portion gave no concerns of dry or staleness.
Curry had a great gloopy and smoothness that coated and dipped well, a standard flavour but a good one even for basic, offered potted or poured which again is always a welcome preference check.

The Price : £7.95 for portion size and quality was bang on the money.

Overall impressions : I'd be happy if this was my local, strong quality, decent portion size, fair pricing and lovely staff, deservedly recommended.

Whilst I've done a few revisits over the years it's usually by refurb or change of hands etc, in this case it's by request of the owner and not because I shorted them on a score but because of their own pride and confidence in their product, a bold gamble I took them up on...

The Shop : as before it has a rustic street food vibe inside, chalk board specials dotted about, with competent staff running the serving station and the chap behind manning the fryers for fresh drop orders, they smashed out the initial surge of customers whilst still maintaining their preference checks along the way.

The Meal : small fish special with a multitude of variation options, I went for beef dripping fish and a combo of battered and regular chips, happily taking the tartare and lemon wedge in addition to my curry pot.
The fish was freshly cooked to order and where previously I hadn't had the beef dripping this time I was sure to, a beautiful crispy caramel crunch on the batter with soft yet meaty flesh inside, not a hint of slimy or cakey squidge in sight, delightful and plentiful in portion size.
My battered/orange and regular chips mix was also a pleasure on the palette, big fluffy regulars paired well with the rich and decadent battered ones with bits n scraps sneaking their way in for a full house of chippy favourites.
The curry was a standard style but mixed well and the right amount of gloopy for a great coating on dipping.

The Price : £8.70 for a portion of this size and quality requires no quibbles.

Overall impressions : call it ballsey, call it confidence but it's well founded and impressive to know that your product holds up and speaks for itself, definitely one of my highlight shops, if only it was closer and open more often.
Seal of approval from my partner as some of the best F&C she's ever had, deservedly getting a score bump.
