We spent an utterly charming late summer’s day in the company of the Rev. Jones, the owner of the wonderful Langstone Court being shown around his house and gardens in aid of local charity, Home Start Herefordshire. Described by Pevsner as ‘the best house of its date and size in the county’, and situated so beautifully in its landscape, it was built c. 1675-1700. Isn’t it marvellous? Architecturally, it’s in English Bond brick with a slate roof, and the sashes 2️⃣ & 3️⃣ were part of a Georgian makeover which replaced earlier mullioned casements sometime early in the C19th. I love that cupola on the stable block 8️⃣, its glorious gates 5️⃣ & 9️⃣, and the iron finial on the top of them, a right hand holding a sickle aloft 🔟. The coat of arms for the Gwillym family, who lived at Langstone Court during the C16th and C17th, features this emblem. Apparently, in heraldry the right hand, or dexter, represents faith, action, sincerity and justice, and the sickle represents agriculture and the harvest, altogether indicating a readiness to perform the work necessary to secure the harvest...

This charming house is The Fosse, sitting charmingly in the corner of Castle Green in Hereford just next to the river and looking particularly autumnal. It was built c.1825 for a Captain Pendergrass R.N. by Sir Robert Smirke, one of the leaders of Greek Revivalism, architect of the British Museum and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London, and more locally Shire Hall in Hereford and Eastnor Castle. Rendered in stucco and echoing elements of Classicism and Jacobean architecture with Dutch gables and a Victorian conservatory, with crisp white windows, architraves, pierced work and moulded quoins etc it cuts quite a dash, and I particularly how the octagonal chimney stacks are echoed in the octagonal glazing bars on the window panes...Splendid!

These shots are of the Town Hall in Hereford - built in terracotta and brick in Edwardian Baroque style c.1904 by Henry Cheers. This replaced previous Town Halls in Hereford - a Tudor black and white half-timbered one built in 1620, and its Georgian neoclassical version which had had its top floor removed and refaced in plaster in 1792. The Edwardian version wreaks civic pride from every angle, with fine terracotta work by W J Bowers. It’s symmetrical with seven bays, an arched door with rusticated columns, double height tripartite mullioned windows above, topped off with the coat of arms for Hereford, an oculus and towers at either end...Glorious!

This neoclassical symphony in yellow ochre is The Roman Catholic Church of St Xavier in Hereford. Originally designed by Charles Day in the Greek Revival style in 1837-39, it’s based on the Athenian Treasury in Greece and features a striking Doric portico 1️⃣, 2️⃣, 4️⃣ & 🔟 with fluted columns 3️⃣, guttae and triglyphs 5️⃣, 6️⃣ & 7️⃣ topped by a golden cross 8️⃣. The coat of arms on the door is that of the Jesuits of whose number, Francis Xavier was one of the ‘seven companions’ who founded the order in 1534. He was canonised in 1622....

This glorious ‘black & white’ half-timbered house in the centre of Hereford is The Old House, suitably named as it was built in 1621, originally as a shop and dwelling, part of ‘Butcher’s Row’, though now housing a museum of Jacobean life. It is a splendid building - timber frame with wattle and daub infill, wonderfully canted mullion and transom oriel windows 1️⃣, 2️⃣ & 5️⃣ supported by figurehead brackets 9️⃣. The gorgeously characterful wood carving is abundant in the ‘enriched bargeboards 3️⃣ & 7️⃣ and pendants’ 🔟 as the listing says. I especially love the angels - the one in the gable 4️⃣, and the one bearing the date ‘1621’ 3️⃣ & 8️⃣, and the fine coat of arms above the door for The Worshipful Company of Butchers (The Butchers’ Guild). The house was restored in 1882 with additional carvings in 1883 by Robert Calke...

Here are a few shots of the lovely Butter Market in Hereford. This entrance facade was built c.1860 by John Clayton in what’s been described by Pevsner as ‘in a kind of free English Wren-Gibbs style’. The facade’s middle section 1️⃣ features the crest of Hereford, beneath which two statues stand in arched niches either side of a central window 6️⃣ & 9️⃣, one bearing flowers, the other carrying a basket, separated by Corinthian pilasters. Above it the tower carries a belltower and a clock 7️⃣ which, after winning a competition was originally destined for the Town Hall, however due to shifts in municipal planning and development, was redirected to the Butter Market. The ground floor 4️⃣ is rusticated with alternating vermiculated bands, and the usual neoclassical trappings of triglyphs and guttae and the whole facade finished off with four rather wonderful keystones with masks 5️⃣, 8️⃣ & 🔟...

Tremendous wood and stone-carving gracing the interior of the wonderful Hereford Cathedral. I particularly love the Consistory Court Stalls in the Nave 1️⃣, 2️⃣, 3️⃣ & 7️⃣ - especially the Devil 1️⃣ and that fabulous winged monkey 7️⃣. These stalls were used by the bishops when they held ecclesiastical courts addressing moral offences, and the misericords were ‘mercy seats’ to allow the clergy some support during long periods of standing. During the 1860s, architect Sir George Gilbert Scott rearranged the medieval choir stalls. Leftover 14th-century pieces from this work were gathered and reconstructed into the current stalls in 1934. 3️⃣ shows the Virgin Mary and her mother, Saint Anne. There are a number of fantastic effigies at Hereford, and 6️⃣, 8️⃣ & 9️⃣ show the wonderful alabaster effigies of Alexander Denton, and sadly his wife, Anne, who died during childbirth when just 18 years old and their baby child...

Moving on from my exterior shots of the glorious cathedral at Hereford, here are a few of inside. The C11th nave is built in the Norman style with hefty round drum pillars supporting arches adorned with Romanesque zigzags 4️⃣, 5️⃣ & 8️⃣. Springing upwards are rib vaults 1️⃣ & 2️⃣ supported on corbel headstops 6️⃣ and meeting at elaborate ceiling bosses 3️⃣. At the other end, the Lady Chapel was rebuilt in the C13th with a crypt below in Early English Gothic style, and in the C14th the central tower was rebuilt with its wonderfully fashionable ballflowers (well, fashionable for the C14th!) both inside and out, like these in the medieval effigy of Bishop Losinga in the south choir aisle 🔟...
Quite superb!

Here are some shots of the fabulous East Front of Hereford Cathedral. It features remarkable examples of C13th Early English Gothic, C15th tracery 4️⃣ and additions, and was restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the C19th. I particularly love the wonderful face hood moulds 4️⃣, 6️⃣, 7️⃣, 8️⃣ & 9️⃣, and how the mandorla (Italian for ‘almond’) shape 3️⃣ & 5️⃣ that was used in a number of ways in Hereford Cathedral; (i) it was used on the Mappa Mundi (c.1300), Hereford Cathedral’s great treasure, to depict Christ in Majesty, (ii) also to surround the C13th seal of Thomas de Cantilupe, Bishop of Hereford, and (iii) the Herefordshire School of Romanesque Sculpture, the master masons who carved the cathedral’s stonework in the C13th, used it as an architectural device particularly on the East Front...

Some more shots from our recent trip to the glorious Hereford Cathedral. Sitting oh so picturesquely by the River Wye 5️⃣ it was frequented by the composer, Edward Elgar 1️⃣ who lived at Plas Gwyn in Hereford, and who was a driving force in the Three Choir Festival which toggles between the cathedrals of Hereford, Worcester and Gloucester.
Architecturally, the North Front 1️⃣, 2️⃣ & 🔟 features the North Transept, built in C13th Geometric Decorated Early English Gothic inspired by Henry III’s Westminster Abbey, whereas the South Front 3️⃣, 4️⃣ & 6️⃣ exhibits older C12th Romanesque influences and the Cloisters 9️⃣
