addressing the online hate šŸ’”

šŸ‘€šŸ‘€šŸ‘€

Honest never received so much hate than when I post me on my bike and the comments I get on my bike position! Like the amount of people telling me to raise my saddle height, or that I a not aero enough… so I decided to listen to the haters and I am so glad I did!

Thank you to Nas at Forge 1860 in Richmond! *Gifted experience but genuinely could not recommend more! And actually such good value compared to other bike fitters and it makes such a difference and can stop you getting injured!

ā€œRebuilding trust in your body can take longer than rebuilding your fitnessā€ šŸ’”

My question to you all was: how to trust your body again after injury?

As it’s been 9 months since I got diagnosed with a stress fracture, and despite a repeat MRI showing it’s healed, I have spent the whole time on my return to running, overanalysing my body, scared of re-injury and convincing myself I have another stress fracture… to the point where my physio must be sick of me asking for reassurance.

But after speaking out about this, so many of you explained you have gone through similar and that so many of us are now unable to trust our bodies, so how do we solve this?

Well this is the advice you guys, who have gone through it, gave!

Obviously every injury and return to sport is different, and this isn’t official medical advice, your return should still be guided by your appropriate healthcare professionals, but hearing from those who have gone through it, is really helping me.

And of course, if you are actually scared you have another injury, please don’t ignore the signs and go seek help as soon as possible! Healthcare professionals would rather reassure you, than see you after a delayed presentation!

But maybe we need to open up more and talk about the mental side of injury rehab a little more, as we are not alone in feeling this! šŸ¤

šŸ“–The Prologue - Have I failed as a doctor?

I think the only conclusion I can come to, is that I have failed as a doctor…

Because the narrative we are fed as doctors and medical students is that the only way you are validated as a doctor is if we take that traditional career path, progressing through training and eventually becoming a consultant.

And therefore, as a doctor who has taken a route which is anything other than conventional, I must have failed.

As my career looked more like working frontline in a pandemic, being an expedition doctor, quitting clinical medicine, going back to university to study public health, starting a health podcast - and I guess whatever I do online here in this space.

Which, in my head, are all still pretty important ways to be a doctor. But I am sure there are many people out there who beg to differ.

The thing is, what I have planned to do with my role as a doctor, I am confident I can help more people than I could have ever done in a hospital and I am so excited to make this happen and share this all with you.

But I think before I do this, I take you all back to the start of my journey, about how I got to this point, as to be honest, I wish I saw more people taking a less conventional route when I was at medical school and in the hospital.

So here is my journey… from why I became a doctor and what my experience working in the hospital was actually like. To why I left, how I build a career outside the hospital, how I actually make money. And then I guess what I want the next few years to look like.

So, lets go right back to chapter 1… 🩺

I hate running. šŸ’”

(ad) turns out 7 months of injury and not being able to run, actually can make the return the running not that fun.

I’m constantly in fear of getting injured again, as well as always comparing myself to past versions of me who were faster and fitter.

And I am doing my best now to try and fall back in love with the sport, when all I really want to do is avoid it forever.

It is just like when I first started running and I hated it and I had to bribe myself to get out the door.

Treating myself to good running routes and food at the end of runs, as well as following a running plan to hold me accountable.

I was on the post injury plan for the first 6 weeks, building me up to run 5k with no stops and now I am on the run further plan so I can gradually build up to the half marathon distance. (code DRBECCA for free trial)

It’s not quick, it’s not glamorous. But it is healthy and it is sustainable.

And I know that the better I ease my way into running now, the more I will be able to run in my future.

I look like myself again 🄺🩺

I went to put on scrubs today to film a video for work and saw what I looked like in the mirror… and I couldn’t help but be filled with emotion.

It’s been two and a half years since I left the NHS due to burnout. A career that I worked my whole life to achieve, all for it to fall to pieces.

Since leaving, I have been trying to build a career away from clinical medicine, as I don’t think I would be ever able to go back due to my mental and physical health.

But as I put on the scrubs today, I couldn’t help but miss the person I used to be when I wore them. I immediately wanted to walk into a cubicle, see a patient and say the words ā€œhi I’m Becca and I’m one of the doctorsā€. And for a moment I could not remember why I left a career I loved so much.

Until I did remember all the trauma that came with it. Those difficult days, the lack of support and the eventual burnout which broke me.

One day I may go back to clinical medicine, there is still a part of me that loves it so much… but for now, I still think there is work to do in stopping doctors getting burnout and I’m determined to see this project through first!

A big update ā¤ļø

I feel like I haven’t been here on Instagram the past 8 months…

My life was flipped upside down 8 months ago from injury and illness and that seemed to set the tone of my life for a while.

I feel like I lost my spark with posting and didn’t have a clue what I was doing in life - as the past 8 months has just been about getting back to some kind of normality.

But with all that healing, I have been trying to build back up a life which gave me some kind of purpose but also trying to regroup to figure out what’s going on.

And I decided flipping my life back upside down the other way was probably the best way to do this šŸ™ƒ

A new flat, the end of my masters and a new job.

So much change (hence why I feel like I’ve been extra quiet on here recently).

And I have found this week so tough, I don’t do well with change at all and I don’t know if I am making the right move… but I think change is necessary for growth and I am ready for a new chapter, away from the past 8 months.

So I am excited to take you guys with me for the journey - and consider this : me being back!

DITL of my girls cycling trips! šŸš“ā€ā™€ļøā˜€ļøad

A perfect trip filled with:
šŸš“šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø group rides
šŸ‘™swimming in lakes
ā˜€ļøperfect weather
ā›°ļøexploring the mountains
šŸ„™ a chef for our meals?!?
šŸ·and evenings to chill and socialise

Although big cycling days + sunny weather = lots and lots of sweating - so hydration and fuelling was key all week! As when we sweat, we’re not only losing water, we’re losing electrolytes too.

I’ve been using O.R.S Sport Electrolytes on my rides, they are a science back hydration formula, created by pharmacists and prescribed by UK doctors, and also contain magnesium and vitamin D - so perfect for long days on the bike!

Here’s to many more girls trips!ā˜€ļø
