It’s british flower week (15th–21st June) — A whole week dedicated to celebrating the incredible flowers grown right here in the uk. Did you know that only around 10% of cut flowers sold in the uk are actually grown here?
British flower week exists to change that, shining a spotlight on your local growers and the beauty of seasonal, locally grown blooms.

To celebrate, we’ve been busy flower bombing sudbury! we’ve placed little bouquets of Suffolk blooms around town today ❤️

When I tell you we’ve been non-stop all spring… I mean it!

Since April we’ve provided flowers for 3 weddings, supplied 9 weeks of subscription flowers through Greg , attended 3 markets (with another 2 still to come), fulfilled pre-orders, wholesale orders, and kept the flower stand stocked whenever we could.

Honestly, I’m in a constant state of not having enough flowers — which is a lovely problem to have, and entirely your fault for keeping me so busy! 💕

For anyone new here, Evie & Flo is very much squeezed around real life. I still work full-time during the week, I’m currently studying for a Level 4 qualification, plus a rather rubbish immune system and a toddler, means energy is often in short supply.

So if I’m a bit quiet on here sometimes, usually it’s because I’m either at work, studying, picking flowers, conditioning flowers, delivering flowers, or asleep somewhere with a cold cup of tea balanced precariously nearby 😮‍💨

Despite our early season disasters, lost seedlings and everything blooming a month earlier, we’ve kept going!
Here are just a few snapshots of what we’ve been up to lately. Thank you for every order, every market visit, every subscription, every recommendation, every like, comment and share. You’re helping this little flower farm grow more than you know. 🌸

**EDIT** only 2 bunches left!

It feels like such a long time since there’s been flowers on the stand… but we’re back today!!

Today’s buckets are full of peonies, lupin, stock, Sweet William, sweet rocket, phacelia and daisies — all locally grown and cut fresh yesterday and this morning.

It’s going to be a hot one today, so if you’d like flowers I’d definitely recommend coming down earlier rather than later. I’ll be bringing them back inside around 11:30 so they don’t fry in the heat ☀️

Ranunculus lifting day!

The foliage has finally started to fade, so it’s time to carefully dig the corms up and flip this bed over for summer crops.

Every healthy corm gets cleaned off, dried and tucked away ready for next season — one of my favourite jobs, even if it does feel a little sad saying goodbye to spring.

Now to make room for the next wave… statice, cosmos and all the summer flowers waiting in the wings.

Flower stand closed this weekend

Whilst we’re waiting for the garden fairies to work their magic and get those peonies to finally bloom, I’ll be making the most of the quiet and cracking on with some planting out — and if I’m feeling particularly virtuous, maybe even a spot of weeding.

Unfortunately we’re completely dictated by the plants, and right now they’re very much in charge. All we can do is wait patiently for them to catch up 🌸

What went wrong this week 🌱
You may have seen other flower farmers on Instagram talking about the frost that caught them out… well I finally got five minutes to head up to the field and check what I’d lost 😅
This little tray of Floret zinnias is just a taste of what my 20m bed looks like right now — the cosmos and marigolds too despite the frost cloth. It’s one of the harder parts of growing in a new space, you’re still learning what it does and sometimes the weather just wins.

The good news? I’ve got a handful of Zinnia seedlings left so they’re coming home for a proper feed and some babying, and I’ll be growing them on to replenish my seed stock for next year 🤞🏽
Oh, and 150 sunflowers sown… just for a little mouse to have the absolute best day of its life 🐭

On the brighter side — I found the most beautiful poppy growing in the garden 🌸 some gorgeous bouquets are heading out to new homes, and it rained today!! hoping for a lot more over the next week… I definitely have the perfect excuse to go seed shopping 🥰

Meet the poppy I definitely didn’t plan… but now can’t stop staring at 🌸

This beauty self-seeded herself in amongst my other poppies — a cross between Amazing Grey and Pandora, which were growing side by side and clearly got a bit too friendly. And honestly? I think she might be even prettier than both of them.

Those deep coral-pink petals, the soft silvery-white edges, all the ruffles and layers… she looks almost hand-painted. She’s got the warmth and richness of Pandora, but with that softer, slightly smoky delicacy from Amazing Grey around the edges.

Genuinely one of the most beautiful things to come out of this field so far — and I can’t take any credit for her.

Safe to say I’m guarding the seed heads with my life. Every single one is being saved.

This is exactly why I love growing open-pollinated flowers. Sometimes the field just decides to surprise you with something completely unexpected. These seeds are absolutely going back in the ground next year, and I’ll be watching very closely to see what she throws next season!

But Monday we’ll be at Market Hill for the Sudbury Plant & Flower Fair — 9am–3pm. Jam jars, fresh cut, grown right here in Suffolk.

The first blog in my new four-part series is now live!

I’ve written about spending an hour learning to graft with Brian Humphrey at Beth Chatto’s Plants & Gardens as part of Hortistry’s propagation masterclasses.

It was a brilliant day, and a real reminder of how much specialist horticultural knowledge is quietly at risk of being lost.
