Tomato seedlings emerging.
I am informed from a local source that bull’s dung is the perfect medium for growing tomatoes. Something to do with the testosterone content, brings them on a treat. So there you are, a splendid topic to crowbar into conversation at the earliest opportunity.

Garden Cuttings Courses for perennial plants (Spring/Summer 2022) in Dornoch and here at Aldie Burn Nursery near Tain. Get in touch for more details if interested.
For those who ‘do’ Twitter, the Nursery has a Twitter feed:
Fennel from seed last year. Emerging through the recent snowfall. Fennel makes interesting and decorative hedging in summer. A multi-purpose herb.
Blackcurrant cutting taken yesterday. Hardwood cutting, roughly 4/5 inches length, cut below a bud and above a bud from a branch of main bush. Place in pot of compost and leave outside (never inside). 10/15 to a pot, no problem. Do not allow to dry out. Blackcurrant bushes in the summer. Simple.
Rooted off-shoots. To be potted and then left outside. Taken yesterday from Lamium, a low spreading, ground cover perennial. This hardy perennial is loved by bees.
A rooted ivy cutting taken yesterday. Currently in the unheated polytunnel awaiting spring growth. In a donated second hand pot of course!
The growing season has begun here. Plants for sale on the tables include rosemary, sage, cotton lavender, lupins, arenaria and more besides. Located over 100 metres above sea level, the plants are hardy and well used to whatever the weather decides to throw at us.
Sleet and snow here today, but should warm up to a balmy 5 degrees. Today we take some rooted ivy cuttings which will sit in pots in the polytunnel to await spring growth. Ivy is a slow one to root. Forward planning and patience required.
Regular updates on our growing activities will appear on this site.
Happy New Year!
