🐝❄️ What do beekeepers get up to during the winter?
When the bees are tucked away for the colder months, there’s still plenty of work happening behind the scenes!
One of those jobs is cleaning and recycling old brood and super (honey) frames — and let’s just say it’s probably not my favourite winter pastime! 😂🐝
I’ve been getting some of mine steamed, but they will still need tackling his in the Burco. Once the old wax and comb have been removed, the frames are thoroughly cleaned using a hot solution of soda crystals and washing-up liquid before they’re ready to be used again.
♻️ Keeping equipment clean is an important part of responsible beekeeping. Recycling frames properly helps maintain good hive hygiene and reduces the risk of old comb harbouring disease or unwanted pathogens.
And while all this work happens behind the scenes, I’m also busy making sure there’s plenty of our lovely local honey available 🍯
It’s easy to see a jar of honey on a shelf and not think about everything that has gone into producing it — from caring for the bees throughout the seasons to maintaining equipment and preparing the hives for the year ahead.
🐝🍯 Every jar really does have a story behind it, and a whole lot of hard work and love! 💛
