Back in May, I posted a photo of me sowing winter bird seed mix on my farm in Devon. This is what the crop looked like a couple of weeks ago before the rain. Everything germinated and it looks like there will be masses of seed for the birds this winter.

The Spring Barley was harvested this week by the next door farmers. We only have a small amount of cereals on the farm but it provides a clean patch of ground for next years Bumblebird Mix.

One man went to mow! Time to cut the wildflower meadow in front of the house. Over the past weeks, approximately 200 Goldfinches have been feeding on the Knapweed. A group of Goldfinches is commonly known as ‘a Charm’ and every year we seem to be seeing more and more. Usually, we would be baling the hay for the cattle but this year I am raking up the green hay and spreading it on my new wildlife area at the top of the farm. The ground was prepared by removing the top layer of soil and grass. This reduces the high fertility which encourages the grasses that compete with the flowers I am trying to encourage. As the imported hay dries out, the seeds will drop and produce another flower patch. I will help the process by chain harrowing the hay and once I feel that I have got most of the seed on the ground, I will rake the hay up and transport it to the compose heap. This will stop the hay adding to the fertility of the patch.
