🍷 A Rare Treat: 2005 Gaiun Martinenga Barbaresco
Tonight's bottle is something special: the 2005 Gaiun Martinenga Barbaresco from Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy in the heart of Piedmont, Italy.
Made from 100% Nebbiolo, this single-vineyard Barbaresco has developed beautifully with age, revealing the elegance and complexity that make great Barbaresco so captivating.
Tasting Notes
🍒 Red cherry and wild berry fruit
🌹 Dried rose petals and violets
🍄 White truffle, woodland earth and leather
🍬 Hints of liquorice, cola and spice
🪨 Classic Nebbiolo notes of tar and mineral depth
✨ Silky, refined tannins with a long, graceful finish
The 2005 vintage is noted for its elegant aromas of cassis, small berries, cola and white truffle, supported by freshness and structure that evolve beautifully in the glass.
Food Pairing
Perfect with:
🥩 Roast beef or aged ribeye
🦌 Venison and game dishes
🍄 Wild mushroom risotto
🧀 Aged Parmigiano Reggiano
🍝 Truffle pasta or slow-braised beef ragù
Its natural acidity and mature tannin structure make it exceptionally food-friendly.
Decanting
Although nearly two decades old, this wine still benefits from 45–60 minutes in a decanter to allow the aromatics to fully open while carefully separating any sediment. Mature Nebbiolo rewards patience.
Paired here with a zesty orange dark chocolate bar, the citrus lift complements the wine's evolved red fruit and spice notes surprisingly well.
