Won at   yesterday at Barony Castle — and what a day it was.

The cash is brilliant, of course, but even more powerful is joining the   movement and the extraordinary companies that have come through it.

I left hugely inspired by the other finalists — from using stem cells to create human-derived breastmilk to improve formula for children (hello  Bio!) to cycling world champions building an amazing space for kids (big up yourselves, ) and a tenacious founder using ai in wonderful and wondrous ways (great work @ Multiply Technology) and so many more besides. Scotland’s start-up scene is absolutely on 🔥fire🔥.

Our fabulous patent & trade mark attorneys, Hindles, chose to feature me as part of their celebration for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science — and I’m honoured.

It’s also slightly surreal to see BlazeBalm reflected back through other people’s eyes. A few weeks ago, an investor referred to me as a “really exciting bioscientist and bioengineer”… and I almost looked behind me to check he meant me.

A phrase that’s come to mean a lot to me is: curiosity beats confidence.

I’ve never considered myself a scientist, but I’ve always been curious — and I’ve been lucky enough to follow that curiosity into some wildly different chapters: founding a wedding venue in Jamaica (which somehow grew into something huge), mushroom farming, and now teaching myself biomaterials through hands-on experimentation and real-world testing so that we could create a world-first, digitally integrated wildfire asset protection system that works without water, power, petrochemicals, or crews.

For me, it’s never really been about the label. It’s about the work — and whether it makes a meaningful difference. And with wildfire, the stakes are very real: an estimated 3.5 billion people are exposed to wildfire risk. Those are the people I’m building for.

We’re hiring — work from home, anywhere in the UK.

We’re looking for a UK-based mobile app developer to join us on an innovative journey. Qualifications help, but a doing-things-that-haven’t-been-done-before attitude matters more.

You’ll need strong Flutter experience and be comfortable delivering across iOS and Android. You should be happy working with GPS/location and permissions, in-app photo/video capture, and simple verification flows using QR or NFC, plus authentication and secure handling of user data and session/evidence records. You’ll also be integrating external data sources, producing simple scoring/status outputs, and applying enough UX/UI judgement to keep the product clean and genuinely user-friendly.

We’re hiring (full-time, 2 months) — work from home / your own workshop (UK-wide).

We’re looking for someone who’s very handy and into hand-operated mechanical set-ups (think gears, cranks, linkages, rollers). Your job will be making and optimising hand-operated mechanical set-ups — no motors or electronics (think automata). It’s niche, very hands-on work, and you’ll be building something no one else has for a problem that affects billions globally.

No formal qualifications needed — we care about a can-do attitude, iteration, and an innovative mindset. You’ll need your own workshop/tools and strong practical skills in metalwork/fabrication and mechanics.

Start: 1 February 2026
End: 31 March 2026
Pay: competitive, 2-month fixed contract
