applying cheap? Mass-produced synthetic fertilizers,

Apply fertilizer one year, and you have good production; however, the following harvest is not as good, so we use more fertilizer. Again, we add more every year but add additional to achieve good production.
The downside of synthetics is destroying natural life and changing the balance from earth to dirt.
