May in Germany marks a moment of real momentum in the vineyards. Across the country’s cool‑climate regions, from the steep, south‑facing slate slopes of the Mosel to the open valleys of Rheinhessen, longer days and strengthening sunshine drive the first real surge of growth.

As the character of the coming vintage slowly starts to take form, we see the rhythm of the German vineyard is fully underway.

Meet the winemaker, Katharina Wechsler of in Rheinhessen.

After stepping away from a career in media, Katharina returned to her family estate in Westhofen and has since become one of Germany’s most exciting voices in modern winemaking. Today, she farms organically with a focus on healthy soils and minimal intervention, crafting wines that are precise, energetic and deeply expressive of place.

Working with limestone‑rich vineyards such as Kirchspiel, Morstein and Benn, Katharina is best known for her vibrant, terroir‑driven Rieslings.

As BBQ season rolls around, it’s the perfect time to bring Spätburgunder to the grill. German Pinot Noir is prized for its bright red berry fruit, freshness and taut structure.

Think grilled steak, chargrilled vegetable kebabs and peppers, with wine that lifts the food rather than competing with it.

A great bottle to try is Pinot Noir from Pfalz, available Laithwaites Wine

Around 12% of all German wine produced is now rosé!

Made largely from Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), and grown across warmer regions like Rheinhessen, Pfalz and Baden, these wines range from light and delicate to more structured styles, making them just as at home with alfresco lunches as they are at golden‑hour drinks.

Set among the dramatic monastery ruins along the Red Wine Trail in the Ahr, Weingut Kloster Marienthal is where history and wine come together.

Originally part of a 12th‑century Augustinian convent, the estate has been lovingly restored and produces Spätburgunder from iconic slopes like Ahrweiler Rosenthal and Marienthaler Stiftsberg.

It’s a place to taste elegant local wines, enjoy tarte flambée in the garden pub, and feel the centuries‑old spirit of viticulture come alive with every sip.

April in Germany is when the vineyards truly come alive. Across regions from the Mosel to Rheinhessen, buds are swelling, shoots are unfurling, and the first hints of green sweep across the steep slopes.

It’s a time of renewal, when the promise of the next harvest is in the air and the vines begin their delicate journey toward producing the crisp, aromatic wines we love. Spring has fully arrived, and so has the energy of the vineyard!

For , we’re spotlighting a winemaker who is shaping a more sustainable future in wine. .p.j.kuehn, based in the Rheingau, has been a leader in biodynamic viticulture for over two decades.

Their approach centres on healthy soils, biodiversity and minimal intervention, allowing each wine to express its site with clarity. Run by the Kühn family for generations, the estate is best known for its precise, terroir‑driven Rieslings, which reflect the Rheingau’s distinctive mix of quartzite, and slate soils, as well as its unique riverside climate.

As the days grow longer, it’s the perfect time to rediscover Spätburgunder. Grown in regions like Baden and Ahr, Spätburgunder is prized for its elegance, bright red berry fruit and silky structure.

With its fresh acidity and subtle earthy notes, it’s a natural partner for spring dishes especially roast lamb, where the wine’s finesse complements rather than overpowers.

A great one to try is Rheinhessen Pinot Noir, an easy-drinking, accessible introduction to German Pinot Noir that still delivers on freshness and soft red fruit character.
