Ruby has such a calming influence on our hens. She wanders around them slowly, showing them that dogs aren't something to be afraid of. Now, even Wynn running continuous, crazy laps around the fence doesn't make our ladies jump!
The other dogs are never allowed in with the hens but their presence outside the fence used to make the hens uneasy and on edge. Ruby's influence has meant I can still bring the whole pack with me on egg missions without fear of worrying the ladies 🥚

50mm 🌧 on already very waterlogged soil, 4 days and 25 pigs on 0.5 acres 🐖
Winter has always been and I'm sure always will be very difficult with the pigs but it sure feels like progress is being made when you're looking at fields like this rather than mud swamps! Hopefully they won't be back here until at least February - preferably March - once they move out in a few days, as long as they don't make too much mess 🐷

Ten piglets from the trusty Sophia ❤️🐖
She made her nest yesterday afternoon and got right on with it overnight so she was all done when I checked her this morning. Two little piglets had gotten lost and wandered about 20m away outside, luckily it's warm and sunny and they'd already fed! All reunited and happy with mumma pig now 🐖
Just what you need, sows who farrow by themselves, with strong piglets who get to the milk bar quickly and there's lots of milk waiting for them! And of course light on their feet so they don't squash any piglets 😬 Completely stress free for both pigs and farmer 🐷👩🌾 (except for the fact she's always a week late so I get impatient waiting!)
What you call a pastured pig 😍
40 gilts moving every 4 days to a new 0.2 acres looking like this 👌 all been planted by pigs, to be grazed by pigs. It's been a long and rocky road to get to this point and especially after this winter I've earned my bragging rights 🤣
Continually trialling different grazing methods and learning what works and what doesn't, while making (many) mistakes does seem to pay off! Still so much more to learn... especially when it comes to winter! 🐷🐷

Another group of piglets weaned 🙌🐷
As much as I love piglets it's always nice to have a month off before any more arrive after weaning each time. It gives me a bit of variety and I'm sure it makes the next piglets seem even cuter when they arrive 😍
We move our cattle every day to maximise impact on the land in a short space of time followed by a long recovery. It mimics the movements of large herds of herbivores on wild grasslands, trampling plants, increasing soil carbon, fertilising and leaving some left to regrow. It ensures there is a variety of habitats throughout the pasture at various recovery stages so many different types of wildlife can survive.
It also allows a bigger variety of plants to grow, rather than just grasses, which is why we call our cattle pasture fed rather than just grass fed 🌱
Mummas and piglets living their best life 🐷❤
Being out on pasture from birth means our piglets start foraging on a diverse mix of plants and grubs at a very young age. This age is key for the development of their gut bacteria so it's important to provide them what you intend to feed them with later in life. We rely heavily on pasture for our pigs' growth so we encourage their gut to be able to digest pasture plants by putting them in fields like this!
Being able to utilise more nutrients from grazing means we don't need to feed our pigs as much additional feed and it brings a great depth of flavour to our pork. The pigs also love foraging all day! 🐷
The last of our cattle outside - the young stock. They love their hay in the evenings!
Guess who finally listened to me telling her to hurry up and the piglets knocking on the door to get out (they really were - you could see them kicking in her belly!) 🐷🐷🐷
Gwendolyn is hoping for sunshine as she chose to farrow outside rather than in the lovely shelter I made for her 🤣
But whatever she wants! (Even if it is a bed made of stinging nettles) she's had 11 lovely little piggies so is a busy mumma now ❤
With the little pigs moved on to their new field I've brought in the big boys to finish the job of planting seeds where the pigs spent a wet winter 💪🐷
They've got to spend a few days tilling the topsoil so that when I throw the seed about they can bury them and then the seedlings will be off to a good start 🌱
Little pigs going into a whole new field (well only a little bit at a time!) 🐷
They've got a lot of grass to eat and will be kept busy planting seeds so in a few months when they come back around the pasture will be much more diverse and support many more wildlife species!
The calm before the storm 😅
...the storm being lots of little piglets that will be arriving in the next few days!! 🐷🐷
