Cup Up Vs Cup Down - The big debate! βοΈ
Thereβs nothing like a good debate and when it comes to coffee, there no juicier subject than whether to stack your cups face up or face down!
Our opinion is based purely on the porcelain 150g/5oz cups with traditional handles pictured.
Temperature π₯
After a stack of cold cups are placed on top of an espresso machine the heat transfers to the bottom cup. Itβs then passed onto the 2nd cup in the stack and so on. As well as this the heat from the cups is transferred to the air surrounding them.
As hot air rises, when the cups are faced up the heat from the cups escapes into the cafe. However, when the cups are faced down the hot air is trapped in the dome of the upturned cup! By our reckoning, this heats the cups up faster and to a higher temperature than if the cups are faced up?
Hygiene π¦
The main reason we stack cups down, is it stops dust from settling in the cup. An upside down cup resolves this, but how long are the cups sat on top of the machine? If itβs enough time for dust to settle, maybe you have too many cups! Furthermore, if the cups are faced down, the lip of the bottom cup is in contact with the top of the machineβ¦which is more likely to be dusty itself! For these reasons we think from a hygiene perspective it is best to stack the cups up.
Stack Stability π«¨
When it comes stability, the stack of cups faced upwards is significantly more stable. So if you stack you cups in towers of 3 or more, we would recommend you stack you cups faced up.
So if you ask us, the answer is up!
These are only our opinions so we would be interested to hear what the rest of the coffee community thinks β If you have any thoughts or any cup up, cup down stories you would like to share we would love to hear from you!
