New Cider incoming!
What a pleasure in yesterday's gloom to be joined by Jon, Dan and Noah of Meggy's Cyder who swam all the way from Usk in Monmouthshire in Walesland.
"That's not Three Counties " I hear you murmur... true, but it's close enough and they all seemed to be great lads and had all the relevant documents...
And... they know an awful lot about Cider, Brush 4 / Class 47 Locomotives and are bound together by a Chihuahua called Meggy who has a taste for the real stuff.
Should fit in very well here 🥂

We're open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday for on and off-sales of Three Counties Cider and Perry... and beyond!

So... perry is a relatively new thing to me. I'd drunk a fair few bottles of Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry Co offerings, which were all delicious, but never really indulged further as cyder is the drink for me. For similar reasons I never had any intention of making perry for Meggy's but after doing a few markets I realised it's a drink in demand - I had numerous requests which led me onto a mission to find some local pear trees. I figured there must be a few about as Monmouthshire was historically a bit of a hot-bed for perry. I have been put onto a few orchards by some kind owners on the local Facebook group - from which I have made a few batches - but this year's yields have made it quite easy to spot the trees from a distance, and it seems this is my new obsession. Whilst out walking the dogs I noticed one of these pictured poking out the top of what appears to be a large ditch. Upon closer inspection there's 5 of them. No idea what they are and I can't work out how I would harvest them. You can see from the sloping sides of the ditch it would be impossible to get a ladder in there safely (I have no machinery) and all the fruit is way to high for a panking stick - anything that drops is scoffed by the sheep etc. It's a real shame to see them unused - the farmer tells me they've been there unused for at least the 75 years he's been on the farm. Maybe I'll work out a method before next year's harvest and I can make a drop or two. Fingers crossed!

Amazing little find today whilst walking the dogs. I was on my way to take a few pictures of a small perry orchard that I'd spotted in the middle of a field near the house. The trees would've been too difficult to harvest as the fruit was so high and anything that dropped was swiped by the sheep. However, I was curious as to what variety they were.

As I was walking across the field I bumped into the farmer and started chatting. He'd been born on the farm 75 years ago and said orchard was there then but nobody had done anything with the fruit. Then he mentions a few more trees by the house, and that I'm welcome to help myself.

I had no intention of making any more perry this year as space is limited but couldn't turn down the opportunity to use the fruit so am going to do a 30l batch.

The farmer was told that they are Old Tom pears. He was unsure of that, thinking they were something else, and the closest I can find to that name is Tom... better known as Tumper. On first glance they are similar for sure but I've quickly learned I'm not great at pear identification. Any suggestions will be gladly welcomed.

Aside from that... well pleased to have saved a little bit of special fruit from going to waste.

PS... I never got to picture the original trees as I was too excited to pick this fruit. I'll try again tomorrow.

Anyone for Worcester Pearmain SV? We pressed 50 litres (small batches as always) this morning with apples collected from a local orchard near Usk. SG measured at 1053 which will finish at around 7% vol. Juice will be left to naturally ferment and bottled at around 1003 SG. Allowing it to finish fermentation in the bottle will give a natural gentle sparkle - petillant naturel (pet-nat) is the official term and the process is known as the ancestral method. We hope it'll be a nice and clean expression of the apple.
