If you are wondering about the progress of the vines I can tell you that they are growing fast. The neat rows are now looking unruly and I know I will have my work cut out to keep them reasonably in order!

The Rondo still leads the way. The flowers are now opening and fingers are crossed that the weather remains dry and gently warm (we don't want much).

The flowers are air pollinated so not too many bees are bothered to visit. They may help but the wind does the work.

Just a couple of pictures from the vineyard today. Vines growing incredibly fast with lots of flowers. I may remove some flowers as too many bunches on a single shoot can be a problem. Maximum of 2 really.

After a bit of bud rubbing, removing the shoots that are in places you don't want, I took a short video of the vineyard (it's only small).

Mostly because of 3 things,

1. Being grateful that we avoided the frost that hit many UK vineyards this week. It's devastating.
2. This is the tidiest the vines look all year and
3. The difference between the vine varieties is most obvious.

From the eldest to the youngest, Villaris (grey green foliage, least advanced) to Phoenix (bright green foliage and more advanced) to Rondo (red shoots upright growth, growing like crazy)..

There are other varieties but they are hiding in their vine guards .

Hopefully you can spot the difference!

Each year I decide that I have enough vines. Although I planted a new row last year. But this year I really didn't need any more. The more vines you have the more work is involved. I had enough to keep me busy, surely?...

But then, another row is only 25 vines and another red variety would give me more wine making options, so, I planted another row! Of course, I won't be planting any next year, obviously..

Welcome to Divico. A swiss bred piwi (disease resistant) variety. Bred in 1996 and released for sale in 2013. I have tried some UK Divico wines and enjoyed them immensely. It will be at least 2029 before I may get a few grapes, but that's the way it works.

Busy day in the winery. The 2025 semi-sparkling white wine (mostly Phoenix with a dash of Villaris) is now in bottles (about 210).

Now it just needs to ferment the added grape juice and it promises to be good!

Hopefully some for sale around October.. so far, pretty happy with this one.

Rondo leads the way! Of course, there will be no more frosts now, it's April! Phoenix and Villaris, not so sure! Fingers...

When deciding upon which red grape variety to plant I spent time trying various English (and Welsh) wines made with either Rondo or Regent. On balance I decided on Rondo.

I read that it was prone to frost, I asked a Welsh grower about this and he told me it was not a problem for him as his vineyard rarely got frost, being so close to the Irish sea!

Hmmmm. I have grown pear trees resistant to frost so as long as there is no late frost, things will be fine. Surely?

What I failed to consider was why? I now know. They bud so early, many weeks before the white grapes. So, nothing can be done except pray for no frost! 🤞
