25 years ago today I woke up at a friend’s house on Thompson street. I called work to see if they were open and they said yes, so I walked up Bleecker street to Magnolia Bakery in a daze.
By my break I needed a drink so I headed over to for a margarita. The place was packed. Everyone was sad drunk.
NY1 news was on tv and then, of all people, Beastie Boys appeared on the screen. They looked straight into to the camera and said“Guys! Please don’t be violent toward Muslim people in the neighbourhood”
Everything felt so uncertain that day but their kind gesture warmed me and I still remember it fondly.
25年前の今日、屋上でこの写真を撮った後に仕事場へ電話すると、「いつも通りオープンしている」とのこと。まるでゴジラ映画のワンシーンのような光景が広がる街の中を歩いて、 #マグノリアベーカリー へ向かいました。
やりきれなさ&飲まなきゃやってられない気持ちで、休憩時間に近所のバーへ。そこは同じように不安な気持ちを抱えつつ昼間っから飲んでいるニューヨーカーたちで溢れかえっていました。
カウンターに座ってテレビの緊急ニュースを眺めていると、非常に場違いな感じでビースティ・ボーイズの3人が登場。
え？どうしてこのタイミングで君たち？と思っていると、3人がカメラに向かって
「近所のムスリムの人たちに危害を加えたりしないで」と訴え始めたのです。
ニューヨーク中が敵意と不安に満ちてたあの日に、こんな思いやりのあるメッセージを送ってくれた、このユダヤ系アメリカンである3人組。今は２人組になっちゃったけど、毎年この日に思い出すエピソードです。
