Why i don't use before and after photos

I know some people might find them motivational, but i never did. I'd be constantly comparing myself to transformation photos id see online

I even had an album in my phone for before and after photos, which basically just became an album full of before photos with no "after" photos 👀

And also, after what? Cuz health and fitness isn't something that has an end point, doing the things that keep us fit and healthy is a lifelong thing, not something we do for a few months and then stop

Since I stopped using weight and how I look as a measure of success, and started focusing more on how I actually feel, I've found it so much easier to be consistent with the behaviours that will help me achieve my goals

👉 I'd love to hear your thoughts on this
👉 Do you find before and after photos motivational?

I really didn't feel like doing my workout today, but I'm so glad I did!

We can wait so long to feel motivated, but motivation follows action, not the other way around

Showing up for yourself time and time again, even when you don't feel like it can feel hard at first, but it does get easier over time. Until eventually, you just become someone who does those things cuz its just who you are and it makes you feel good

What's one way you showed up for yourself this week, even if you didn't feel like it?

Is tracking calories disordered? That all depends on the person.

For some people it can be a great tool for fat loss, it can help to bring awareness to the foods they are eating, and help them reach their goals.

For others, it can leave them stuck in a cycle of being "on track" or "off track" and feeling guilty or ashamed if they go over their target.

I'm not against calorie tracking, I did it myself for years, but you do need to ask yourself if it is actually helpful, or is it just making your relationship with food more disordered.

Not allowing yourself to ever eat certain foods that you see as "bad" or that don't fit in to your target isn't a sustainable, or enjoyable, way to eat for the rest of your life.

If you have any questions about tracking, or want to know about other methods you can use instead, my DMs are always open and I'm always happy to chat 💚

Can journaling really help improve your food relationship?

I've recently started working with a coach myself, and one of the things I've been doing is daily journaling and reflection prompts.

It's really helped me to think about my food choices rather than reacting on autopilot and just doing the things I've always done out of habit.

Im not saying journaling alone will magically improve your relationship with food, but it can help you to start making more concious choices that align with your longterm goals.

I'd love to know, have you ever tried journaling? Did you find it helpful?

Eating food isn't "cheating"

Calling food a "cheat meal" makes it feel like you’re doing something wrong. Something that you should feel ashamed or guilty for.

Food doesn't have moral value, there are no "good" or "bad" foods. Some foods contain lot's of nutrients and some foods just bring us joy

No foods in isolation are good or bad, eating nothing but chocolate obviously wouldn't be great for your health, but neither would eating nothing but carrots for the rest of your life!

You're not cheating if you eat pizza or a burger, you're just eating food

Planning your meals is a game changer! But what happens when things don't go to plan?

Planning and getting organised with your food will completely change how you approach food, making those choices in advance means you are showing up for yourself

But life will inevitably happen, you get stuck in traffic, running late or the meal you had originally planned feels like waaaay too much effort after a long day at work!

That's why you should always have a plan B for these times. Having things like frozen jacket potatoes, a bag of frozen mixed veg, grains pouches, tins of beans and tuna, ready meals

Having these things in that you can just chuck together and heat up in minutes means your far less likely to just pop to the shop and buy something less nutritious or order a takeaway

Pick a plan B option for breakfast, one for lunch and one for dinner. That way you always have something to fall back on whatever life throws at you

What are some plan B options you could add to your shopping list this week?

Should you weigh daily if you're trying to lose fat?

That depends on the person. If you're someone who can just weigh yourself then carry on with your day, seeing it as purely data, then you're probably gonna benefit from daily weighing

If you're someone who steps on the scales, sees the number go up, feels like the entire day is "ruined" then flys into f**k it mode? Then it's probably better to put the scales away and focus on other measures of progress for a while instead.

Things like more energy, better sleep, eating regular balanced meals, and being able to do things you couldn't do before are all great measures of progress that have absolutely nothing to do with the number the scales happen to give you that day.

Give this a try if you struggle to disconnect from the number on the scales, and let me know how you get on

You don’t need to "make up" for the weekend

I had a social event yesterday, I had a couple of drinks and some food with friends, I ate a lot more than I had originally planned to

But instead of "making up" for it today with excessive cardio and eating less food, I got up this morning, had my planned breakfast, took Nuala for a walk, and will be eating my planned lunch and dinner, maybe even a couple of snacks too

A healthy relationship with food means accepting that sometimes we will eat more food than we had planned, and that's ok

What are you planning to do today to nourish your body after the weekend? 👇

Well it would be rude not to buy new books when they're on offer 🙈
