This year's BBC Radio 4 Reith lecturer will be the best-selling author and Spell Songs inspirer Robert Macfarlane,

Robert will argue that a belief in human superiority has brought us to the brink of planetary catastrophe.
He says: “We imagine ourselves perched atop a pinnacle, when in fact we are entangled in a web of life."
Across four lectures, each taking one of the elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) as its focus, he explores the causes and consequences of this ‘human superiority complex’ for our relationships with the larger living world. And he shows how scientists, writers, artists and activists around the world are contesting the story of human exceptionalism in order to realise a hopeful, viable future on Earth.

The lectures will be chaired by presenter, journalist and author, Anita Anand and will be recorded in front of live audiences in London,Bangor, Aberdeen and Amsterdam. They will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service later this year and will be available to listen to on BBC Sounds.

🌊 Our rivers need urgent action.

On World Rivers Day, we’re celebrating our local rivers, streams and brooks that are at the heart of our communities, places where people come to walk, swim, paddle, picnic and connect with nature.

But our rivers should be healthy, living ecosystems. They're home to beavers, otters, water voles, kingfishers, dippers, herons and countless fish, insects, amphibians and plants 🌿 They support our landscapes, our communities and our wellbeing. Yet too many of our rivers are being polluted and degraded. The condition of our waterways is unacceptable.

Water is life. Our rivers are being polluted. This is not OK. We need to fix the system.

That means action from water companies, local authorities, communities, individuals and national government. It means tackling pollution at its source, protecting river habitats and putting nature recovery at the heart of change.

And it means listening to the people who care deeply about their local rivers and are already taking action to protect them.

We all deserve clean, healthy rivers, and nature is the solution.
