Set of Two RHS Wisley Pots
At Whichford, we have been growing vegetables, herbs and fruits in our pots since we started making them. When you visit the Pottery you will see pots of produce weaving their way around our courtyard garden and stockyard. Of all the vegetables to grow, lettuce is one of the most rewarding. Here are a few tips from our gardener Mark for growing lettuce in pots. As all Whichford pots are made with a drainage hole in the base to prevent water logging, Mark will begin by covering this with crocks - ideally a curved piece of terracotta.
Using a good quality peat-free compost, fill your pot to about three quarters full.
Mix a small handful of slow-release fertiliser into the compost. Use organic chicken manure pellets to give your plants a good start.
Once you are happy with the position of your plants, fill the pot with compost, leaving about 3cm from the top of the pot - this will make future watering easier.
Finally, water thoroughly until you can see water coming out from the bottom of the pot. Mark will now place this RHS Wisley Pot in our courtyard garden for the potters to enjoy a few leaves with their lunch!
