Big Bertha is a thing of beauty and is now all up and running again after a relatively straightforward and not too expensive repair. She’s had a hard but loved life and is still going strong at 31 years of age. She can now be tucked away in the barn for winter for a well-deserved rest 💤

Now that drilling has been completed for another autumn and the machines have been put away, we can focus on the turkeys and preparing the farm for the busy silly season ahead.

Each morning, we roll out these straw bales, which were saved after combining (threshing) this year’s wheat crop. The straw is spread in the traditional way, by hand with a pitchfork, as this avoids dust and unnecessary stress to the birds.

Keeping our turkeys clean and dry is our priority and is critical for the birds’ health and welfare.

I needed cheering up after yesterday’s tractor (Big Bertha) hiccup, so today I collected another 30 store pigs, and they seem to be settling into their new home nicely.

I buy these pigs from fellow turkey and pig farmer, Mike Smith & Son of Great Garnetts Farm, Barnston, Dunmow. Like ourselves, they produce quality, traditional, farm fresh turkeys for Christmas, and the Smith family also run a farm shop at Great Garnetts Farm, where you can buy their award winning, home grown pork, bacon and gammon.

It’s always nice to support another local farming family, and we’re very pleased with the quality of the pigs we get from them!🐖

The very welcome 1/2 inch of rain we’ve had this week has made all the difference. We’re now achieving perfect seedbeds for sowing barley, and, more importantly we’re no longer working in the dust!

We’d also like to say a big thank you to all our followers who take the time to comment. It’s much appreciated. Many of the comments come from people we know, including some who helped on the farm many years ago. Unfortunately, we don’t always reply, as this would involve my daughter, and my technology skills usually involve using a big hammer! 😂

I think my rain dance worked a little too well, as this week we’ve received 12mm of rain, or what I would call ½ inch. Working with my dad and uncles for many years meant I never quite grasped metric!

It won’t be long now before I start moaning about the wet weather, but for now, we have a busy weekend ahead. We will be sowing the all-important barley, that we need it for our pig and turkey feed next year!🐖🦃

A cracking start to the day. Here we are loading wheat seed into the seed cart, pleased to say our 41 year old little Massey is still earning her keep. We are persevering with drilling in these dry conditions, fingers crossed for some rain tomorrow 🤞🏻It will not be long before us farmers will start moaning that it’s too wet, but then moaning is what we do best 🤷🏻

Unfortunately we didn’t receive quite as much rain as we hoped for this week (not even enough to settle the dust). It’s now October though, so the wheat and barley seeds need to be sown. As the old farming saying goes, it won’t grow in the bag 🛍️

Now is the time to start thinking about ordering your traditional farm fresh Christmas turkey! Since 1953, the Mann family have been rearing turkeys at Little Mountains Farm in Great Totham. The founder’s great-granddaughter is now looking after the birds using the same traditional methods and growing them to the same high standards. We are also unique as our turkeys are fed with our own home-milled feed, made from crops grown right here on the farm 🌾
