Finally we have had some long awaited rain! This has arrived plenty late enough for certain crops, but rain will always help something on the farm. This wheat crop and the Phacelia will certainly benefit, and the fruit will always enjoy rain from above 🌧️☔️

We’re hoping to open for PYO strawberries in around 2 weeks (weather depending)!🍓

This warm sunny spell of weather is bringing the fruit on nicely, but they are needing plenty of water through the irrigation system in this dry weather 💦☀️As you can see there is plenty of green fruit so hopefully a bumper crop again this season we will keep you posted on their progress.

These little pigs were pretty relaxed yesterday, which was nice to see on a warm day!🔥

It’s not easy with livestock in these warmer temperatures. I muck my pigs out early in the morning when the temperature are cooler to avoid stressing them any more than needed. Other than just quietly checking that their water bowls are constantly full, we leave them well alone throughout the day.

As and when we need grain to make pig and turkey feed, we cart it from our main stores back to our granary. Although the combine harvesters do a very good job of separating the grain from the chaff, we still like to clean the grain further before grinding into meal. Here we are cleaning wheat, this dressing machine sieves out any remaining straw, chaff and cracked grains. Dressing our feed wheat, barley and oats is quite a costly process but it means we can produce top feed. This is most important for animal health and hopefully a quality product!

The year soon comes around again…last week we prepared the sheds ready for this year’s day old turkey chicks (arriving on the 1st week of June). Here we are chopping Oilseed R**e straw into the sheds. We use this as litter, levelling it across the floors to keep the chicks clean and warm. Once old enough, the brooder heaters are turned off and wheat straw will then be used for their fresh bedding!🐣

The recently planted strawberry plants are starting to show signs of life, although it would be nice for some warmer nighttime temperatures to push them forward 🍓

We have just planted 2500 new strawberry plants into grow bags where they will be fed a mixture of water and fertiliser. Weather depending, they will produce fruit ready for pick your own late June early July this summer! We should get three consecutive years picking from these plants and bags 🍓👩🏻‍🌾

If we can we always like to give jobs ago ourselves, and here our carpentry skills have been put to good use. Our old Essex barn doors have been patched up over the years and were never very easy to open, so we have made them good again! Once painted they should last many more years 🤞🏻
