It’s that time of year again, and we’re starting to get an influx of turkey enquiries! 🦃

You’ll be able to order your Christmas turkey online or directly from the farm from 1st October 🎄

This is the ideal, and only, time to carry out our annual hedge trimming around the farm, as the fields are dry and the crops have been harvested. For myself, hedge cutting is one of the most rewarding jobs and, of course, a very important one. Regular trimming keeps hedges thick and healthy, which is ideal for wildlife, while also preventing damage to machinery and allowing more light into growing crops.

You need three things to make a hedge look neat and tidy:
• A good hedge
• Razor-sharp flails
• An operator who takes pride in his work

There is actually a fourth thing you need, and that’s the ability to ignore the cost of trying to keep the farm in tip-top order. It’s my responsibility to the next generation. After all, we are only custodians of the land 🌲

Well my rain dance sort of worked today 🕺🏻

It’s still not enough rain to start cultivating, or for farmers that would like to drill (plant) their oil seed r**e crops. Let’s hope for a wet miserable bank holiday weekend, that will really cheer us farmers up ☔️☔️

Sad day today as the majority of the swallows have now departed. Apparently swallows from the British Isles head for South Africa or Namibia depending on the exchange rate!!! We will look forward to seeing them again next April 🌸

It seems like we have had an excellent breeding summer for the swallows that arrive on our farm every April. Trying to count the number of birds perched on the wires and flying overhead, we must have well over 100 of our feathered friends. With water, livestock and irrigated fruit attracting insects, along with open-fronted barns where they build their nests, it appears we have the ideal habitat. It won’t be long now before they depart on their long journey back to Southern Africa ✈️

Some of you may have already seen the post we shared last year about making our own turkey feed from the grain we grow here on the farm. Producing high-quality feed in our own granary is something we are incredibly proud of, and we feel it gives our turkeys a distinctive quality. We’re sharing it again for any new followers who may be interested in learning more about how we produce our Christmas turkeys at Little Mountains Farm!

With the fields being so dry, it is the perfect time to carry out maintenance work or fell any trees that need attention. This picture shows how nature works, much like life itself. Here, we have three generations of trees, but unfortunately, the eldest tree in the middle is clearly coming to the end of its life. By felling this tree, the hedge underneath will benefit, as will the two remaining trees, especially the young oak tree to the left. By doing this now, before the old tree deteriorates any further, we will still be able to get some good firewood from it, and the tree trunk should make some quality timber 🪵

The government funded legume we planted this spring to help improve soil health, support wildlife and, of course, benefit our pockets has now finished flowering. This means we can start preparing the land for the following wheat crop.

We use the combine to chop up the legume residue, but we don’t harvest any of the seed. Once we receive some very welcome rain, we’ll subsoil and cultivate the land, ready for drilling wheat this autumn 🍁🍂🥮

Seeing as we haven’t had any rain for seven weeks, following an already dry spring, our field conditions are rock hard. This is making it almost impossible to prepare the land for autumn planting (drilling).

We even tried cultivating some fire breaks around our farm buildings and our neighbours' homes, but that ended badly with broken welding rods!

Maybe if all our followers did a rain dance, it would help soften the ground. Then, like typical farmers, we can start moaning that the land is too wet instead!
