Ever wondered what beekeepers get up to during the winter? 🐝

Well, there’s certainly no putting our feet up!

While the bees are tucked away in their hives, we’re busy getting ready for next season. That means building frames, assembling hives and making sure we’ve got everything ready for spring.

This rather large delivery arrived today, and it’s another big step forward for Dee Valley Honey Co.

After a hugely successful year, we’re investing back into the business and expanding the number of colonies we keep. There’s a fair bit of work ahead of us over the next few months, but we’re really excited about what 2027 could bring.

We also wanted to say another massive thank you to everyone who’s supported us so far. Whether you’ve bought a jar of honey, placed an order through our website, shared one of our posts or simply told someone about us, it really does make a difference.

We’re still a small family business with some big ambitions, and it’s lovely to see things starting to come together.

Now, anyone fancy helping us build a few thousand frames? 😂 We provide w**e, b**r and snacks! 😝

We asked how far along the Dee one Facebook post could travel, and you’ve sent us photographs from the source right down to the sea 💛

Thank you to everyone who joined in. We’ve enjoyed hearing about where you live, the places you visit and, of course, Bryn the dog's unexpected first swim!

We chose the name Dee Valley Honey Co. because this is home. We’re a family keeping bees in Overton, but over time we’d love to have hives in locations all along the Dee, from near its source all the way down to the estuary.

Our hope is that people throughout the valley could enjoy honey from hives close to where they live, and know who’s looking after the bees. It’s something we want to build towards gradually, finding the right places for the bees as we go.

It’s been lovely getting to know some of you through the comments. Here are a few of the photographs you shared, following the river from its source towards the sea.💛

Ever fancied keeping bees but wouldn’t know where to start? 🐝

We’ve started adding some helpful articles to our website for anyone interested in learning a bit more about beekeeping.

Our first one covers getting your first hive, the equipment you’ll need, what to expect in your first season and a few things we’ve picked up along the way.

Over the coming months we’ll be adding more articles, including a look at what actually goes on inside a beehive throughout the year.

Hopefully they’ll be useful whether you’re thinking about getting your own bees or you’re just curious about what we get up to!

So close to another milestone! Can we reach 1000 followers over the weekend??

A massive thank you to everyone who has supported us! We only set this page up in August and the response has been nothing short of amazing!

What started off with Emma unfortunately losing her job in May through redundancy has blossomed into a thriving family business 💛

We really cannot thank everyone enough for all your help along the way!

We have big plans for next year and we are so grateful to have you all along for the journey!

We’ve been wondering just how far along the River Dee we could reach with one Facebook post.

When we chose the name Dee Valley Honey Co., we wanted something that reflected the beautiful part of the world we’re lucky enough to call home.

But the Dee stretches far beyond our little village of Overton, from the mountains of Snowdonia, through Bala, Corwen, Llangollen, Bangor-on-Dee and Chester, all the way to the sea.

So we thought we’d try something this weekend.

Could we collect a photo of the River Dee from every town and village along its banks?

If you live anywhere along the river, let us know where you’re from and share a photo of your favourite spot. We’d love to see the Dee through the eyes of the people who know it best.

And if you’ve got friends or family further up or down the river, tag them or give this a share.
We’ll start with this picture taken near Overton. Looks like the locals were enjoying a paddle!

10 things you might not know about honey.

It’s National Honey Day, so we thought we’d share a few facts about honey.

1. Honey can last for thousands of years. If stored correctly and kept free from moisture, honey can remain preserved for an incredibly long time.

2. A worker bee produces an estimated 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime. Not a great deal when you consider how many bees it takes to fill a jar.

3. The flowers make the difference. Clover, bramble, heather and ivy all produce different honey. Even honey from the same hives can taste different from one year to the next.

4. It can take around a million flower visits to produce a 227g jar of honey. The actual number depends on the flowers and how much nectar they’re producing.

5. Crystallised honey hasn’t gone off. It’s a completely natural process. Some honey sets within weeks, while other varieties can remain runny for months.

6. Bees don’t make honey for us. It’s their food supply, particularly through the winter and during periods when there’s little nectar available.

7. Not all honey is golden. Depending on the flowers, honey can range from almost colourless to very dark brown.

8. Nectar isn’t honey. Bees add enzymes and reduce the water content of nectar before storing it as honey.

9. Honey is naturally acidic. Its acidity, high sugar concentration and low available water help prevent many microorganisms from growing.

10. Every honey harvest is different. The weather, rainfall, temperature and what happens to be flowering all influence the honey the bees produce.

We’ve learnt a lot since we started keeping bees, and one of the things we’ve come to appreciate is just how much goes into producing a single jar of honey!

Our first market on Saturday really got us thinking about something…

We’re living in a world where you can do almost anything without speaking to another person. Shopping, deliveries, even AI answering questions we’d once have asked someone else.

Are we losing a bit of that human connection?

We went along on Saturday hoping to sell a few jars of honey, but came away with much more than that.

We met some lovely people, got chatting to other stallholders, shared ideas and even made a few contacts that could open up opportunities for our little business.

And we loved watching people try our honey. Being able to explain where it comes from, talk about the bees and see their reactions. We’re pretty sure we wouldn’t have sold half as much without those conversations!

It reminded us how important local markets are. You get to meet the people who’ve actually grown, made or produced what you’re buying. Something you just don’t get from picking a product off a shelf.

A lot of work goes into organising these events too, often by people giving up their own time.

With Christmas markets starting to pop up everywhere, we’d love to know which ones you’re planning to visit over the next few weeks.
