Embracing Our African Heritage Through Local Food

In today’s world, we see a lot of people, especially young ones, drawn to continental meals like spaghetti carbonara, chicken and chips, and all sorts of creamy dishes. While these meals are delicious, we cannot forget the importance of our traditional African food. Our ancestors created these meals using natural ingredients, cooking in ways that were both healthy and nourishing—long before seasoning cubes and artificial flavors became popular.

As mothers and guardians, we must pass this food culture down to our children. Feeding them local meals isn’t just about nutrition; it’s about identity. When we eat what our ancestors ate, we connect with our roots. Our food tells a story—one of history, culture, and shared heritage across Africa.

For example, today I’m eating okra soup with green leaves, but instead of pairing it with banku (which is common in Ghana), I am eating it with eba—a dish more associated with Nigeria. This simple meal reminds me that as Africans, our food connects us beyond borders. What we call palm nut soup in Ghana is known as banga soup in Nigeria, yet both meals share the same rich, flavorful base.

Food is more than just survival—it is memory, culture, and unity. So, as we enjoy global cuisines, let’s also take pride in our own. Let’s cook and eat the meals that remind us of home, meals that nourish both our bodies and our heritage.
