It is regrettable that the media is causing needless fear regarding human metapneumovirus (HMPV). This is incredibly deceptive and not scientific. HMPV is a common cold virus that has been identified for many years; it is not a new virus.
HMPV is frequently found in patients who exhibit cold symptoms because to the growing use of multiplex PCR panels for respiratory infections. As with any virus, problems might rarely arise, but they usually only affect high-risk populations like the elderly, small children, and immunocompromised people.
Crucially, compared to viruses like influenza (flu), HMPV is significantly less harmful. Indeed, according to recent data, influenza accounts for 30% of respiratory infections, whereas HMPV is responsible for only 7%. This is true even in China.
Influenza, which may cause severe sickness and has a higher fatality rate, is a far more serious public health concern than HMPV. We must avoid instilling unnecessary anxiety in the public and instead focus on providing factual, evidence-based information. Such scaring tactics are unproductive and irresponsible.
