How fowl pox vaccination is done in turkey poults

1. Age of vaccination
• Turkey poults are usually vaccinated at 6–8 weeks of age
• In high-risk areas (lots of mosquitoes or past outbreaks), it can be done as early as 4 weeks

2. Type of vaccine
• A live fowl pox vaccine (often turkey pox or fowl pox strain)
• Comes as a freeze-dried vial that must be reconstituted with the supplied diluent

3. Route of administration – Wing-web method
This is the standard and recommended method for turkeys.

Steps:
A. Reconstitute the vaccine exactly as instructed
B. Catch the poult and extend one wing
C. Locate the wing web (the thin skin between the elbow and shoulder joint)
D. Use a two-pronged vaccinator (bifurcated needle)
E. Dip the needle into the vaccine
F. Pierce through the wing web once, avoiding blood vessels and bone
G. Release the bird

NB:
-One puncture is enough
-Do not inject into muscle or under the skin

4. Handling & biosecurity tips
• Keep vaccine cool and out of sunlight
• Use reconstituted vaccine within 1–2 hours
• Do not vaccinate sick or stressed poults
• Control mosquitoes, since they spread fowl pox
