Domaine d’Auvenay, Lalou Bize‑Leroy’s private estate, is one of Burgundy’s most elusive sources of white wine. With minuscule holdings and uncompromising biodynamic farming, production is measured in handfuls of barrels, making each release a rarity.

The Meursault Les Narvaux 2001 comes from a high‑slope vineyard above the village, known for its tension and mineral cut. The cooler 2001 vintage lends freshness and precision: aromas of orchard fruit and citrus combines with a satiny texture, racy acidity, and a finish marked by saline minerality. It’s a wine that shows how even a “village” site, in the hands of d’Auvenay, can rival Premier Cru stature.

Champagne reborn. A handful of bottles are often held back in Krug’s cellars, tasted over decades, and disgorged and released only when the cellar masters deem them ready, becoming Krug Collection. This rare second life of Krug Vintage, and this instance the 1988, disgorged in 2017, reveals crystalline precision and depth, with golden exotic notes of truffle, honey, quince, spice, and roasted coffee. Plush, creamy, and endlessly persistent - a timeless expression of rarity and elegance. The 1988 forms a trilogy of the house‘s legendary vintages alongside 1989 and 1990, of which the former was the latest to be released.

Roumier Musigny 2000 - a wine of rare grace and complexity. Floral, spiced, velvety, and still evolving after two decades, it embodies the soul of Chambolle, balancing elegance with intensity. One of Burgundy’s most coveted bottles, it remains a benchmark of timeless beauty.

Congratulations to the fortunate collector who secured this original case of 12 bottles. Few experiences in wine are as extraordinary as holding such history in your hands.

Two unforgettable bottles: Hudelot-Noëllat’s Romanée St Vivant 2010 dazzled with its silken elegance and spice‑laced red fruit, while Cédric Bouchard’s Val Vilaine Blanc de Noirs 2019 delivered crystalline purity, orchard fruit, and a saline finish that lingered long after the last sip.

2009 was a vintage of warmth and generosity, marked by ripe fruit, supple tannins, and a sense of immediate charm. Yet, beneath that plush exterior lies the structure to evolve beautifully over time, delivering wines of both approachability and longevity.

Against this backdrop, Domaine Armand Rousseau’s Chambertin Grand Cru 2009 shines as a benchmark, with Jasper Morris praising the “magical sense of balance” and Antonio Galloni describing it as “breathtaking in its beauty”. While certainly drinkable now, this is certainly a vintage that critics agree will continue to develop elegantly for.

Domaine d’Auvenay is Lalou Bize-Leroy’s most intimate project, a jewel-box estate tucked into the hills near Saint-Romain. If Leroy is the stage for grand gestures, d’Auvenay is the sanctuary - tiny parcels, obsessive detail, and wines that feel like pure terroir distilled into glass. Every release is scarce, every bottle a glimpse into Lalou’s uncompromising vision.

The 2004 Chambolle-Musigny shows a world of elegance. Pale ruby in the glass, it opens with violets and wild strawberries, lifted by a delicate freshness. On the palate, it’s layered yet weightless - sweet red fruit balanced by fine tannins, finishing sappy and long. A wine that whispers of Bonnes Mares in its poise, but with the intimacy of Chambolle’s silk.

Ringing in the new year with Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-du-Milieu 1985.

Four decades on, the wine carries a quiet elegance with notes of dried herbs, autumn earth, and a fading echo of red fruit. The tannins have softened into silk, leaving a finish that feels more contemplative than powerful.

This vineyard is Lafon’s crown jewel in Volnay, with old vines rooted in clay-limestone soils that give depth and character. Lafon’s approach - careful farming, patient élevage, and respect for terroir - means bottles like this don’t shout, they whisper, offering a rare glimpse into Dominique’s early years at the domaine.

Laurent Ponsot’s philosophy of minimal intervention allows the old vines of Clos de la Roche to speak with purity and authenticity. Even in 2004 - a vintage that challenged many - Ponsot achieved a wine of remarkable clarity and focus, avoiding the greenness of the year and instead delivering a bottle of profound balance and character.

The nose is captivating: wild red berries, black cherry, and a whisper of forest floor, layered with smoke, spice, and that unmistakable sauvage character that defines Clos de la Roche. On the palate, it is both supple and powerful, unfolding in waves of fruit, earth, and game, with a depth that feels almost endless, a hallmark of Ponsot’s mastery.

Wine List:

1. Dom Perignon 1980 - Bright copper colour with a nutty, caremalised nose. The bubbles, though delicate, are very refined, revealing intense notes of citrus, orange peel, honey, and kumquats, finishing with slight hint of spice.

2. Jacques Selosse Millesime 2007 - Refreshing and energetic, displaying the hallmark oxidative character Selosse is known for. Nutty, explosive, and bursting with brioche and toasted almonds, balanced with incredibly zingy acidity, and a long memorable finish that seemingly lasts forever.

3. Coche Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 2009 - With 16 years of age, this Meursault village simply defies expectations showing so much power and grace. Full-bodied, spicy, intense citrus oil, yellow fruit and nectarines. Layered and complex, there is no rush to drink this, as there is just such a long road ahead for this wine.

4. Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru 1988 - Soft, velvety, and very pretty. This has aged very gracefully and is the perfect moment to drink. Leather, tea, spice, plums, sweet to***co, and a touch of dried herbs, this just glides ever so softly on the palate. This is aged Rousseau at its best.
