From a wet, unproductive corner of the farm to what we hope will become a pond filled with life. 🌱🦗🦋🐝
Earlier this year we planted hundreds of trees in what has always been a wet, rush-prone corner of the farm. Fast forward to now, and we decided it was the perfect spot to dig our first pond.
First job was carefully digging up and transplanting the native ash, birches and alders we’d planted here.
Now, just a week or so in, the pond is already filling — and the wildlife is already finding it. We’ve watched birds buzzing across the water, snacking on the insects gathering above it.
Next we’ll sow native wildflowers across the disturbed banks and then, for the most part, let nature take over. By next spring and summer, we hope this little patch will be alive with insects, plants, frogs and who knows what else.
Another corner of the farm transformed. 🌱
