Instead of putting solar farms on food producing land, you could support farmers by incentivising putting solar on existing shed roofs first.

It would help meet renewable targets AND give farmers potentially a second income. It’s a system that’s already working for farmers in European countries but our electricity grid is seriously outdated and it’s easier to put in a big solar farm in one area near well connected grid areas than update it nationally.

Ridiculous.

Very naughty!!!

It's almost always Maisie with her big (beautiful) bum holding up the other cows in the morning for no other reason than the power goes to her head 👀😂

People say we “need” industrial farming to feed the world. We have industrial farming and farming with chemicals now and it’s not even feeding our own country or paying our farmers.

Over 60% of the average Irish persons diet is made up of imported food. One in five of our primary school children is living with obesity or overweight. What kind of food system have we created for the next generation?

Thank you to all the lovely people who came on the farm walk today organised by Centre of Food Culture Ireland

We had such a super time. I love seeing the interest in the farm and was BLOWN away by how far some people came for the visit!

Come make butter with me from certified Bord Bia "grass fed" cream.

Then I compare this 95% grass fed cream turned butter to our 100% butter. It's the same process and ingredients in each one but a different result.

Irish dairy is still a really high standard but cows are now fed on average 44% more grain then they were ten years ago. I feel this has a ripple effect on the food that milk then produces. And consumers aren't stupid since there's been quite a few butter debates online!

Back in stock this week in the farm shop!

They are always delicious but also always limited. We will spread them out as much as possible so there are some steaks each day but it will be on a first come first served basis.

We will also have our free range pork sausages and burgers back in stock.

As a young farmer I had this idea driven into me that you were only “successful” if you went up in cow numbers and went into debt.

Like someone getting a shiny new car to look “successful”. I don’t think that anymore but I still see that mentality all around me.

I love eating pork but we need to have a serious think about how pigs are raised and what they eat.

Essentially, every pack of sausages, ham or pork you pick up in a large supermarket will have been born, raised and killed inside without ever seeing the light of day outside. Intensively reared pork is fed genetically modified, imported feed, usually high protein like soya that often comes from third countries where chemicals that aren’t permitted here can be used on crops.

Food should be simple like it was when our grandparents and great grandparents were farming. If you can, please try to find a small scale local farmer and especially pork producer and support them.

Granny’s review of my scones! 👀

Proper buttermilk is what I put the texture down to. I was never that interested in making buttermilk but once I started granny said it made a huge difference to the texture of her soda bread and similarly I’ve found it makes a big difference to the scones. No, I’ve no idea why but it smells really sweet and tasty and granny says that’s how it was in her day.

I sometimes wonder if the quality of food has been slipping over the years and we’ve just been conned into not noticing 🤔
