My agricultural education only ever trained me to be a price taker using artificial and chemical imports or animal feed.

Farmers should be price makers!! Every single person depends on them for the quality and quantity of food they eat every day.

Learning to be a beef farmer never involved learning the parts of the animal and how much they made selling directly or in a butchers shop. We were just trained to produce cheap meat and sell it for whatever we could get to a beef factory.

My family farm is only profitable because we don’t farm the way the system has told us to farm.

We used to be so reliant on subsidies but ever since we started farming outside that system we gradually weaned ourselves off them and could be completely independent of them. We’re not unique, lots of small farmers around Ireland are thinking outside the system in order to make a living but those farmers are never held up as examples to the next generation of farmers.

Instead, we have a system which rewards volume not value and keeps two thirds of farmers in this country from earning a decent income from their farm or requiring an off farm job to keep things afloat.

I am not promising we won’t have to ration raw milk like last year per customer, but we WILL have raw organic milk all year round heading into the winter months available from the farm shop.

Steaks are back in stock!

I never imagined the demand for organic beef when we set out. We are working on keeping up with demand but never would have got this far without our local butcher .butchers.croom who is also a farmer and guided me through the process over the years. It’s fair to say I hadn’t a clue when we started but with his support organic beef has become a bestseller from the farm shop 💪

I gave up full time journalism this year to focus on the farm business but I keep doing the podcast for the because you literally never know who you’ll meet or where you’ll end up!

The podcast is called Organic Matters and we’re on Season 5 so there’s a huge back catalogue 👌

We can only keep our nitrates derogation if we bring down pollution from chemical nitrogen fertiliser in our rivers - which went up this year. Yet now there’s a Government grant aid for chemical fertiliser in the budget.

It could have been for multi species awards or clover, which are all naturally nitrogen fixating and deeper rooting in times of droughts. There were previous Government grants for these.

But no, let’s just keep throwing chemical fertiliser at a problem. What do we think the outcome will be?
