We’re thrilled to share some exciting news from our Oyster Gardens following the July/August spawning season!
🦪 Successful Reproduction: We’ve observed fertilized larvae (spat) settling on the screens beneath the gardens. Baby oysters are starting to appear, and we’ve spotted them during lab examinations (see pictures 2 & 3).
🌊 Thriving Marine Life: Since the baskets' last cleaning in July, they’ve attracted a huge variety of sea squirts, anemones, and other marine life, showing how well the ecosystem is thriving (see pictures 4).
🦀 Unexpected Visitor: A large crab found its way into one of the baskets! Luckily, the oysters are tough enough to handle crabs. After a gentle nudge, the crab was safely returned to the sea floor (see picture 5).
🐟 Diverse Marine Life: Our gardens are now home to fish fry, feather stars, and juvenile crabs, showing that the ecosystem is not only surviving but flourishing (see picture 6).
With our oysters almost a year in, this marks a major milestone for the Green Ocean Oyster Garden project in Dublin Bay. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to grow 👀✨️
