Let's reset with an introduction 😊

My name is Joanne; chief baker and creative lead here at Cakes from Heaven in Dublin. I'm blessed that two incredible and legendary young men call me mum.

When I started Cakes from Heaven, it was me, my home oven, a hobby that wouldn't quit and absolutely gracious customers, You!

A few weeks from now, we won't look the same. We'll have more capacity, smoother ordering, same heart, same Joanne. This has been made possible because you all kept ordering, celebrating and trusting us with your biggest moments.

This was a difficult cake to make!

One of the unique things about being a family baker is that our customers become a part of us. Each cake from the christening represents an older age or a new accomplishment.
We get to know some of the children without meeting them. We know them from the stories m**s and dads share. We get an insight into their personalities. One day, mam is ordering a cake for her baby and years later the baby is ordering a cake for mam and his missus/girlfriend.
We never planned for one of our babies gaining his wings before getting a cake for mam or dad.
We love you A. We will remember you, ALWAYS 🙏

Saudade🕊
She wasn't the easiest to birth. Every time I turned, it seemed I couldn't remember the finish line. At first, she was a large cloud. Then she became a lady with a billowing dress and a hat.

I won't ever be able to remake her but I have this photo to remember the way she was. She defines my heart and hope completely.

In Esan language, it is okọ bi ulumokọ. It is used mainly for pounding yam (elite swallow)😊. We can tell you about how the gba gbo sounds of the mortar and pestle indicate a sumptuous lunch or dinner; but that's not the reason for this post.

In Lucan, there is a man who serves authentic pounded yam in his restaurant. For more than 15years, he has given his customers the opportunity to journey back home through food. It was a delight to be commissioned to make this cake for his 60th birthday.

Tundun tundun🪘 The sound our hearts make when it beats. The sound of the drum of our forebears.

The talking drum/gangan/kalangu is carved from a piece of hardwood and covered at both ends by stretched animal skin. The ends are then connected by strips of animal skin that are twisted or laid straight. In this case, just cake!

Did you know it was once banned in the United States?
We absolutely loved making this for Zion, who plays the gangan in church. Zion is proof that a part of our heritage will prevail into the future.
