-The French Press-
Here is a guide to achieve a clean and crisp coffee using the French press:
For this technique the ratio of coffee to water will be 1:16 (30g of coffee:500g of water). If you find this isn’t strong enough, or is too strong, you can try adjusting the amount of coffee by a gram or two.
Boil your water first, and prepare everything else while your kettle heats up.
Weigh your coffee.
Grind your coffee. You will want coarse to medium coarse coffee. Most important is to not grind them too fine. Alternatively, you can purchase Ground Coffee.
Put your coffee in your French Press and pour 500g of boiling water over it. To evenly coat the grounds, pour in circles.
Wait 5 minutes. During this time the coffee will steep, infusing the water with its unique flavours.
A crust will have formed on top, this is good. Break up the crust so that all the grounds get a chance to steep. Scoop out as much of the foam and bits on top as you can.
Wait another 5 minutes. This method takes longer than most. But this is vital!
Plunge the press until the screen rests on top of the liquid. This is where the technique is different. You don’t plunge all the way down. This is so we don’t strip up what’s been settling for the last five minutes.
Gently pour the coffee into your mug and enjoy!
