TIME TO RETHINK YOUR TRUTH ABOUT THE SUN?

A FULL story on sunlight.

"This evidence might be the etiology of the op**te problem we have today in humans brought out of the sun and placed in front of TV's, computers, and video games built around modern blue artifical light that destroys the retina and brain over time. It lowers dopamine levels. This means the human teethered to technology needs more food, more op**tes, to maintain the same stimulus over time. Are you seeing a trend develop in this blog yet?"

SUMMER RUNNING, HAVING A BLAST!

"It is pretty clear that hearts are designed for dealing with the stress of a little running, but what about marathons? Some people would argue that extreme endurance running is bad for the heart because it is not "designed" for that function. Are we “born to run” in bare feet? Experts like Daniel L...

This is what taking painkillers for just one day does to your body

Article on ibuprofen. personally inuse it only as an absolute last resort in the few cases where an infection caused debilitating pain. Definitely not riskikng it for minor pains or for inflammation

Taking ibuprofen could quickly increase the risk of heart attack – a “worrying” potential side-effect that appears to occur from the first week of regular use, according to a new study.

Effects of Cell Phone Radiofrequency Signal Exposure on Brain Glucose Metabolism

Yep. another reason we are sugar addicts today. cell phone use increases brain glucose metabolism

The dramatic increase in use of cellular telephones has generated concern about possible negative effects of radiofrequency signals delivered to the brain. However, whether acute cell phone exposure affects the human brain is unclear. To evaluate if acute ...

Blue light has a dark side - Harvard Health

My Android phone just installed a new operating system upgrade and it now comes with 'Bluelight Blocker' as standard functionality cutting out the need for other apps like Twilight. Looks like manufacturers of devices themselves are now owning up to the harmful effects of artificial blue light:

http://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/blue-light-has-a-dark-side

Light at night is bad for your health, and exposure to blue light emitted by electronics and energy-efficient lightbulbs may be especially so. At night, light throws the body's biological clock—the circadian rhythm—out of whack. Sleep...

Principles to live by if adhering to the 'primal' principles

Four years ago we presented Nassim Taleb's ideas of 'antifragility' and how they relate to running - do you recognise and agree with these principles and would you guide your running decisions on them?

"Muscles should thus no longer be considered as the 'motors of movement' but dynamic regulators of connective tissue tension." - Biotensegrity - a rational approach to biomechanics by Graham Scarr

The field of biomechanics is rapidly being replaced by better models - more equipped to truly represent the wonder that is human (and animal) motion.

In the modern age a lot of fitness concepts emerged from these classical models which have now been found to be full of holes. Muscles were seen as simple pulleys that contract to pull on levers (the bones). Yet this is not at all what actually occurs.

this would not matter if we hadn't had a whole industry of 'muscle training' spring up around this understanding. In this case we picked a simplistic reductionist model and made an (incorrect) assumption on how the human body works. we then designed an entire industry (for a while) based on this incorrect understanding.

Like everything else it is developing but shows the need to always step back and have a 'primal' and 'holistic' approach (non-reductionist) - had that been done the obvious issues with the classical model would have been a warning signs that perhaps it was not accurate and perhaps we should not rush in and get people to do lots of isolated muscle exercises that ignore the greater picture of how movement actually occurs in practical situations.

Try to think of other fields of science where we currently operate with models that are treated as if they are 'the full facts' but in reality are only 'the current best model, full of holes'. Are we modest enough in our certainty in designing and guiding people's lives in those examples? Why do we not learn?

KILL THOSE DISTRACTIONS IN 2017

Fixing your lifestyle and environment is the key that unlocks the full potential of what you do in terms of how you eat and train.

Don't be afraid to start small: going into the New Year I noticed just how many newsletter emails were going to my junk folder. While they were going there it still potentially took attention to note that 'some email have dropped into my junk folder' and then 'delete the email'. In some cases the distraction would be bigger because I'd be interested in the content of the newsletter and would suddenly waste 1 or 2 minutes skimming it.

So I decided to unsubscribe every single newsletter (ok, I kept one - I'll keep it a secret which one) I had and turn my mailbox notifications off. what does the latter mean? It means I only see new emails when I click the button 'send/receive'. This is a very quick way to turn off some of the distractions (read: stress) that really don't add much to life.

Do I need to know what those newsletters say? Not a chance. If I wan to know something truly important I buy a book or I go actively search for it. The constant bombardment of largely random information, is a major stressor for the modern population. Ironically that could include this post. Information only have value when you act upon it within a reasonably short time-frame - then its valuable and a good investment of your time. All the rest - that you don't act on - threw it in the junk and unsubscribe.
