BACK TO STONE AGE
Until recently, an urgent bid to embrace ‘the modern’ and ‘the novel’, has dismissed the use of traditional kitchenware as anachronisms and they have been traded for hi-tech mixers and grinders, in urban kitchens circumscribed by the needs of a ‘quick-fix lifestyle’.
Even though mixers and blenders have hijacked our kitchen, there ain't no proxy to a pestle and mortar. The food prepared in such vessels is enriched with the minerals of the respective stone. These pots are carved out of a naturally occurring stone, thick walled and heavy.
The taste of mujji chyutt that my grandmother used to prepare in this pot still lingers on my tongue.
