May 21st is International Tea Day — a day to celebrate tea and the millions of people around the world whose lives are connected to it.
Few countries share a relationship with tea as deep, complex, and personal as India does. It is fitting, then, that India proposed International Tea Day to the United Nations.
In Palampur, tea has been livelihood, culture, and identity for generations — and it is a privilege to bring that story to cups across the United States.
The women in this photograph — along with generations before them — are at the heart of that story. Rising early, walking the gardens, and plucking leaf by leaf, season after season, their hands are the first to touch every cup of tea that is brewed.
Today, we celebrate not only tea itself, but the people behind it — the farmers, pluckers, and communities who have cared for these gardens for generations.
Raise a cup today. And know that somewhere in the foothills of the Himalayas, those leaves were tended with patience and care.
