🏠😳 Developers cleared almost everything around it.
One house remained.
In 2007, homeowner Wu Ping refused to accept the compensation being offered for her property in Chongqing, China.
As redevelopment moved forward, construction crews excavated the surrounding land, leaving her home standing alone on a tall mound of earth above a massive construction pit.
Photos of the scene quickly spread around the world.
The image looked almost unreal.
🏠 One house.
⛰️ A hill of dirt.
🏗️ A vast construction site surrounding it.
Reports said the property lost normal water and electricity service during the standoff, but the family continued resisting the offer and remained in the home.
The unusual situation earned the property a nickname:
"Nail House."
Just like a nail that refuses to be hammered down, the house remained standing while everything around it changed.
Eventually, the dispute ended with an agreement, and the family moved out.
But the image lived on.
For many people, it became one of the most recognizable symbols of redevelopment, property rights, and resistance in modern China.
Some see stubbornness.
Some see determination.
Others see a homeowner standing up for what they believed was fair.
