Each year even during the pandemic, the Ganpati festival brought out the creative instincts of the simple but highly talented villagers of Pen. While their illustrious menfolk made their name and fame by their shilpakari prowess and were hired by Ganesh murti ‘factories’ to sculpt the most artistic Ganesha idols, the womenfolk would come together to make the delicacies for which most mortals and even the immortals look forward to!
Especially during the pandemic, when the Lord of Wisdom, Vighneshwara had to per force take a sabbatical, these womenfolk got newfound attention, when for the first time, their Ukadiche Modaks found their way into a few privileged and well-networked homes Mumbai. Word spread around about the skilful nimbleness of their fingers, as they quickly wrapped the hot pooran in silky rice paste and got attention beyond Pen.
Our Chef Kaustubh has now engaged these very artisans as he believes that “We make modaks to make our Bappa happy, for when his followers who consume them are happy, the Lord will sure be happy”. Sometime ago, a cook I met near the base camp of Mount Kailas near Mansarovar answered similarly when I asked him what makes him toil 18 hours a day, weeks on end, to which he replied simply and demurely, “Serving pilgrims and devotees are a path to serving the Lord!”
The target is to reach out to netizens who could get an opportunity to savour the handiwork of devotion of the womenfolk of Pen for the oncoming Chaturthi festivities.
