इस दिन भक्त व्रत रखते हैं, विशेष पूजा-अर्चना करते हैं और कन्या पूजन (कंजक पूजन) भी करते हैं। कन्या पूजन में नौ कन्याओं को भोजन कराया जाता है, क्योंकि इन्हें नवदुर्गा के रूप में देखा जाता है।

दुर्गा अष्टमी पर लोग दुर्गा सप्तशती का पाठ भी करते हैं और देवी दुर्गा से जीवन में सुख-समृद्धि और शांति की कामना करते हैं।
